Around the league;

The first place Milwaukee Braves have hit a stone wall in their last two games against third place Montreal.

Two starting pitchers for the third place Expos have shutout the Braves in the first two games of their series and extended the Expos' winning streak to six games, their longest winning streak of the season. The Expos scored five times in the first inning off Braves starting pitcher Pat Jarvis. Catcher Aaron Barnes had a two run triple, and three different batters had run scoring singles; Henry Goldschmidt, Tubby Pfund, and Joe McCray.

The Expos scored two more runs in the fifth inning when Matt Hoch (two hits) doubled in a run and scored the other on an error by Braves shortstop Rogers Hornsby adding up to a 7-0 Final.

In game two Dooley Easterly went nine innings for Montreal (5-1 2.91) shutting out Milwaukee on seven hits three walks and seven strikeouts. Montreal cruised to a win in this one scoring ten runs on eleven hits. Red Hatter hit a two run homerun off Johnny Sain in the first inning, his 9th.

Matt Hoch hit his 6th with nobody on in the 3rd to finish off Sain and make the score 4-0.

Montreal scored runs in the 5th and 6th innings and four in the 7th to blow this one open.

The Philadelphia Athletics are currently seven games out of first place with a 17-18 record. The A's have won three straight and seven of their last ten to show some visual signs of competitive life on the club.

In the second of three against second place Pittsburgh, the Athletics again were the beneficiary of some good pitching and timely hitting.

Thirty one year old veteran lefthander, Ezra Bernaro went 7.2 innings gave up two runs, walked three and struck out eight to up his record to 4-2 4.20 ERA.

Lefty reliever Tim Bullett, a former All Star, took over in the 8th with one out and Dave Lopat on second with a double. Bullett walked Damaso Muniz and then got Arch Douglas to hit a one hopper back to the mound to end the inning.

Bullett got two outs in the ninth sandwiched between a walk to Keith Clark, and a two out single by David Jordan.

Matt Chalmers was summoned to get that one all important out to end the game.

Chalmers did get that out by striking out Walt Jones for his 2nd save.

Philadelphia scored a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Angel Bryden doubled to right field with one out. Wally Bullinger advanced Bryden with a ground out. Rube Lewis singled to left field driving in Bryden.

Pittsburgh then took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning on a walk to Arch Douglas and a homerun by Pete Maskrey, his first of the season.

Ken Hiller walked the bases loaded in the inning and gave up a two run single to Danny Vernon to put Philadelphia ahead 4-2.

In the seventh the Pirates scored two more runs on run scoring singles by Brian Starnagle and Bill Kilgus for a 6-2 Final.
