The A's overcame Montreal 2-1 despite being outhit 10-2. Philadelphia is now 19-21, seven games behind first place Milwaukee but just two behinf the two clubs immediately in front of them, Montreal and Florida.

Monteal had ten hits in the game but winning pitcher Ezra Bernero got three timely double plays from his defense and newly acquired catcher Camilo Clarkson threw out one runner stealing.

Bernero went eight innings allowed nine hits and one run, walked three and struck out five for his fifth win in seven decisions.

Montreal's only run came in the seventh inning on a solo homerun by Scott Baker, his third and the 7th in 63.2 innoings pitched this season by Bernero.

Philadelphia scored its only two runs in the first inning when Wally Bullinger was hit by a pitch and Rube Lewis followed with a homerun, his fifth. It was off losing pitcher (5-2) Dooley Easterley.

Tim Bullett got the call in the ninth and earned his 3rd save of the season. He gave up a walk and a hit sandwiched around double play number three and a flyball to secure the win.

Bullett replaced Mark Chalmers (2-2 3 saves) as the closer after Chalmers was traded to Milwaukee for catcher Camilo Clarkson (.235 0 3), RHP John Johnson, minor league starting pitcher George Adams, and minor league catcher Andy Schrivner.
