PHILADELPHIA 10 LOS ANGELES 9

Joe Lanier needed a good outing to keep his spot in the Philadelphia starting rotaion and was not able to have one. Lanier last just 2.2 innings getting racked up for five hits, seven runs (all earned) and one strikeout.

Lanier got into and out of troulbe in the first inning. Lead off batter Babe Godby doubled to left foeld. Lanier walked Johnny Allen and Oscar Harley to load the bases with one out. Lanier got Ron Williams to pop out to rookie second baseman Willie Anderson for the first out. Tommy Browning flied out to centerfield deep enough to score Godby. Lanier escapred with just one run scored by getting John Hudson to pop out to first baseman T.J. Steinbach.

1-0 Los Angeles.

The A's came right back in the bottom of the first inning to go ahead 2-1 on a double by Angel Bryden and a run scoring single by Danny Vernon. Vernon stole second base, went to third on a ground out and scored on a ground out by Danny Vernon.

The Dodgers tied the game 2-2 in the second inning. Ryan Evers walked, stole second and Carlos Jones singled past shortstop Tony Tompkins.

The Dodgers pounded Lanier in the third inning. Harley walked and Ron Edwards singled to centerfield sending Harley to third base. Tommy Browning doubled to centerfield driving in Harley. Lanier walked the next two batters (Hudson and Evers) to load the bases again. Once again Lanier battled getting Carlos Joners on a short pop up toi centerfielder Danny Vernon. Lanier struck out Dwight Robinson for the second out, but could not get out of the bases loaded hole twice. Babe Godby doubled to clear the bases. (Browning, Hudson and Evers).

Mike Clark replaced Lanier (2.2 IP 5H 7R/7ER 6BB/1SO) and got Johnny Allen flied to center field to end the inning with Los Angeles ahead 7-2.

The A's kept the scoring parade in the game going in the third inning. Wally Bullinger walked. Rupe Lewis bounced into a fielder's choice at second forcing Bullinger. Tony Tompkins tripled to drive in Bullinger and Tompkins socred on a sacrifice fly by Steinbach.

7-4 Los Angeles.

Tommy Browning added a run on to that in the top of the 4th with his 9th homerun off Mike Clark (5th allowed in 38.2 innings pitched).

Tompkins hit his 8th of the season for Philadelphia to put the score at 8-4.

Bowning triples to start the seventh inning and scored on a single by John Hudson.

Browning had a double, triple and homerun, scored three runs and drove in three runs. He missed hitting for a cycle by the single.
9-5 Los Angeles.

Philadelphia kept coming back in this game. T.J. Steinbach hoered in the seventh inning with one on off George Johnson (2nd allowed in 31 innings pitched).

9-7 Los Angeles.

Mickey Fisher pitched two scoreless innings, the 7th and 8th innings.

Tim Bullett (3-0) pitched the ninth inning getting a double play to get out of the inning unscored on.

He would get the win when the Dodger bullpen folded in the bottom of the ninth and surrendered three runs.

George Johnson began the inning on the mound for the visitors. Johnson hit Lewis with a pitch. Tompkins struck out. Steinbach walked to put two on with two outs. Anderson srruck out for the second out but Johnson walked Camilo Clarkson to fill the bases. Orlando Criscola singled in two runs to win the game in the ninth inning for the second straight game.

10-9 Final.

Around the league ---

Pittsburgh's 6-3 loss to San Diego dropped them a game behind Milwaukee who defeated Florida 8-6. Montreal downed San Francisco 6-4.

The win for Philadelphia put them one game over .500 for the first time this season. They have been at .500 twice before after going 0-9 to start the season.
