Connie Mack League Baseball

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

There were great games played all around the National League starting with Philadelphia's 8-3 defeat of second place Pittsburgh. Philadelphia has had no luck at all against the first place Braves (2-7 outscored 60-35) but have been competitive against the second place Pirates posting a respectable 4-2 mark that, with the latest win, dropped the Pirates three games behind first place Milwaukee and 2-4 against Philadelphia.

The subject came up in the Pittsburgh clubhouse. Several players including first baseman Keith Clark, catcher Dave Moeller, and pitcher Raul Metzger, all voiced growing frustration with the efforts of the A's versus the Braves. Plainly spoken, they accused the A's of laying down against the Braves in a recent series, and requested a league investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile they did play a game.

Pittsburgh quickly fell behind in the first inning when shortstop Johnny Gilbreath made a two base throwing error that allowed Angel Bryden to reach and score on a single by Wally Bullinger off the afore mentioned Metzger.

Metzger did not allow another run unttil he wilted in the seventh inning. The A's struck then for three runs on three hits off the extremely unhappy Pirates starting pitcher. Dave Ponder singled past Gilbreath, who obviously did not have his best defensive game in this game, Pitcher George Adams attepted to sacrifice the runner to second and succeeded in beating it out for a infield single. Angel Bryden, a hit hitter in recent games, double past left fielder David Jordan.

Brydwn scored the final run of the inning on a one out ground out by Paul Schorr.

4-0 Philadelphia.

Pittsburgh scored two runs on six hit s off Adams (3-1). Adams had uncharacteristic control issues wlaking five and did record seven strikeouts.

The two runs socred on a two run hiomerun by Damaso Muniz, his sixth of the season.

Muniz has hit .321 against Philadelphia with nine hits in twenty eight at bats with three doubles, three walks one sac-fly and one homerun.

Philadelphia blew the game open in the top of the ninth inning off reliever Keith Nelson. Nelson walked lead off batter Dave Ponder. Danny Vernon pinch hit for Adams. Ponder stole second and scored on Vernon's pinch hit double. After Bryden fanned, Bullinger singled to left field scoring Vernon.

Milt Travers replaced Nelson.

Schorr flied out.

Rube Lewis doubled into the left/center field gap scoring Bullinger and he then scored on a two out triple by Tony Tompkins.

Adams departed after eight inning and relegated starter Joe Lanier made his second relief appearance in the ninth inning giving up a run on three hits before getting a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

The Milwaukee Braves took care of business with a 6-4 victory over Montreal.

Johnny Sain (6-3 got the win over Sal Sprague (6-5).

Mark Chalmers, the former Philadelphia closer claimed his ninth save of the season, sixth as a Braves. Chalmers and George Adams, now with Philadelphia, were both key parts of that trade, and both shined in games played today.

The Expos tooik a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by Mike Greisenback and a RBI single by Red (Mad) Hatter.

Bob Avila's (6th) solo homer in the second cut the lead to 2-1.

The Braves ralled again in the bottom of the 6th inning when Duke Sims blasted his 9th homer of the season with the bases loaded. The second homerun hit in the game off Sprague the 1950 Cy Young Award winner.

LA Dodgers 21 San Diego Macks 0

San Diego's Jack Schmidt was splendid in defeat allowing only a walke to Tommy Browning, who was promptly eraced in a double play and a two out single to pitching opponant Mel Short in the third inning.

Misfortune plagued Schmidt in this game. He leftwith one out in the seventh when a blister developed on the ring finger of his pitching hand. Secondly, that pitching opponant Short, also had a masterful performance.

Short went the distance giving up five hits one walk and no runs to improve to 3-7 2,26 on the season.

The only run of the game scored in the ninth inning on a passed ball on catcher Joe Ross after pinch hitter Charley Stancau tripled.
