The top three teams in the National League all lost.

The San Francisco Giants defeated first place Milwaukee 3-2 in 10 innings.

The Braves dropped to 1-5 in extra innings and the Giants improved their record to 2-3.

Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bob Avila tripled and Hank Aaron singled off San Francisco starting pitcher Dennis Scalzi.

San Francisco tied the game 1-1 in the 3rd inning when Lou Burdette allowed a one out single to Bill Diaz who stole second base (16th) and Dave Menefee singled him in.

Scalzi struck out the first two batters in the 5th inning then walked Cleon Jones. Avila and Aaron followed with consecutive singlkes driving in Jones. Milwaukee went in front 2-1.

The Giants rallied in the bottom of the 6th inning. Pee-Wee Carpenter singled, and stole his 20th base of the season. Dick Hogan tied the game 2-2 with a two out single.

Marlk Chalmers, the Braves ace closer, took over in the bottom of the 10th inning and was saddled with the loss (2-5) when he gave up cosecutive doubles to Carpenter and Bill Smith.

Luther Chiles, the third pitcher used by San Francisco, earned the win (2-2), with two scoreless innings.

Florida 4 Pittsburgh 3

Florida broke a 2-2 deadlock when Marquis Miller doubled and Owen Schneider singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Odell Northern (LP 0-1).

Damaso Muniz hit his 7th homerun for Pittsburgh in the 3rd inning.

Philadelphia 7 San Diego 5

The Macks took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on a two out singles by pitcher Phil Thobe, Enzo Hunter and Wayne Wambsganns scoired Thobe.

Philadelphia ralled for two in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 2-1 lead. Shortstop Tony Tompkins singled and stole second (4th). T.J. Steinbach doubled to centerfield driving in Tompkins. Steinbach advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Thobe and scored on a ground out by Danny Vernon.

Philadelphia added on in the bottom of the 6th inning. Angel Bryden singled, Wally Bullinger doubled (Bryden scored). Orlando Criscola singled in Bullinger to put Philadelphia up by three; 4-1.

Joe Fernandez walked and scored on pitcher Phil Thobe's single in the 7th that cut the lead to 4-2.

Three solo homeruns by Wally Bullinger (5th), off Fritz Costello (10th/40IP, Rube Lewis (9th) off Eddie Gonzalez (4th/28th), and defensive replacement Dave Coffman hit his first career homerun off lefthander Reggie Anderson (6th/37IP).

Phialedelphia moed back to the .500 mark (29-29)and are lingering there eight games behind the leaders.
