Toronto 11 Tampa Bay 2

The Tads banged out nineteen hits and scored elevan times to thump Tampa Bay soundly. After John Coffmamn held Tampa to just two hits and one run over seven innings in game one and the Toronto bullpen protected the shutout with two scoreless inning, game two turned out to be a slugfest blowout for the visitors.

Of the nineteen Toronto hits, five were homeruns. Pete Matchick hit a two run homer in the 5th, John Schulte then hit a solo shot in the 6th, Wynn Fallon followed with another two run drive in the 7th, Frank Myers' eighth inning round tripper came with the bases empty and Ed Voigt capped it all off with a three run blast in the 9th.

Julio Kirkland took advantage of all the offensive support with a complete game effort allowing eight hits, two runs did not walk a batter and struck out four for the win.

Los Angeles 3 Minnesota 0

The AL World Series rep stayed undefeated with a 3-0 shutout of Minnesota. All three runs for Los Angeles came in the second inning off losing pitcher Molly Davis.

Davis' walk of Craig Garner began his own problems in that inning. Garner came around to score on a one out single by Chester Chapman. After Chapman was thrown out at third base by right fielder Lance Heimach on a single by Luke Davis, Brett Southworth hit a two run homerun.

Red Jackson (8 innings no runs on three hits) and Snipe Blume (one inning two hits no runs 1 strikeout first save) handled the pitching chores foe LA flawlessly.

Kansas City 7 Oakland 4

Kansas City traded runs freely over the first seven innings but the Athletics were able to secure their second win of the season with three unanswered runs over the final two innings.

Noodles Giebell, the former closer, got the win when he took over for starter Ross Bartell (6.2 innings 9 hits 4 ER 3BB 5SO) with two outs after Roberto Staiger had homered off Bartell with two outs. Giebell's strikeout was the second key play of the inning to keep the game tied. New acquisition, catcher Chris Riley threw out Tiny Roberts who led off with a single was equally important.

Aside from that inning the scoring came freely in the earlier innings.

Kansas City took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three straight singles by Mike Jackson, Bill McCall, and Joe Knoor which loaded the bases. The two runs, scored by Jackson and McCall came on infield ground outs by Elmer Riggan, and rookie Greg Brock.

That lead did not last through the lead. Oakland tied the game 2-2 on three straight hits off their own; Greg Bloodworth doubled to center, Bill Hill singled to center and Greg Killefer had a RBI double to center. The tying run came in on a ground out by Chuck Hinzu.

Kansas City went up 3-2 in the 5th inning. Third baseman Steve Blue socked his first homerun with one out and no one on off Oakland starting pitcher Luis Barranca.

The A's managed to hold on to that lead for an inning before Oakland came back to tie the game in when Staiger hit his game tying homer off Bartell.

Noodles Giebell became the pitcher of record when Kansas City took charge in the eighth inning. After Bill McCall was robbed of his potential third hit of the game by pitcher Jordan Hiller, Joe Knoor singled stole second, went to third base on Riggan's single to left and scored on rookie Greg Brock's single to take a 5-4 lead.

The A's added two more in the ninth for the7-4 final score on a walk to John Mathews, run scoring triple by Mike Jackson ad McCall's RBI ground out.

Perry Webster, acquired from Houston with catcher Chris (Cy) Riley for All Star catcher Javier Healy and pitcher Herman Beville, closed out the game for his first save with the A's.
