Game one 7/5/52

Washington 5 Kansas City 3

Washington knocked Kansas City from the ranks of the unbeaten with five runs on ten hits in game one of a sold out series in D.C. Washington's win saw the improve to 3-1 with Kansas City dropping to the same record.

Kansas City had all the early momentum scoring single runs in the first three innings to assume a 3-0 lead.

The A's first run came in on a Mike Jackson homerun in the first inning. It was Jackson's first of the season and it came of starter John Guillen with two outs. (1-0)

Guillen walked the first batter of the inning, Greg Brock. Guillen struck out the next two batters, but the rookie Brock stole second, and then came in to socre on a single by cater C.J. Wells. (2-0)

Control problems tormented Guillen in the 3rd as well when he walked John Mathews and Jackson reached on a two base error by center fielder Bill Willis putting runners on second and third. A passed ball on catcher Charlie Finney allowed Mathews to score. (3-0)

Guillen was able to stop the scoring right there by striking out Brock and Finney threw out McCall attempting to steal second base. That changed the momentum of the game as Washington offense suddenly came alive.

Larry Garriott walked Kevin Carew to start the inning. Garroitt fielded Guillen's bunt attempt and got a force at second on Carew. Guillen reached first. Garriott then gave up singles to Joe Stanton and Jesse Campbell. Guillen scored on Campbell's hit. (3-1)

Right fielder Derek Krueger threw out Stanton going to third for the second out and Johnson flied out to Mathews to end the inning.

Washington tied the game on Charlie Finney's homerun in the 4th inning then took a 4-3 lead in the 5th. Campbell drew a lead off walk. Joe Johnson singled. Campbell went to third and scored on Lee Nagy's blooper to right field.

Joe Almeida homered off Johnny Beasley in the 8th. 5-3 Washington.

Bobby (Dancing Bear) Burgess pitched the 9th for his first save.
