Game two... 7/6/52

Kansas City assured itself of a winning road trip with its fourth win on a six game sojourn into enemy territory to start the season. Kansas City had 11 runs on 15 hits to even the series one game apiece.

Tim Neilson started for the A's and recorded ten strikeouts, no walks over seven innings but did not figure in the decision. Neilson allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits.

Kansas City scored two runs on two hits and two walks off starter Ralph Gray in the top of the first inning. Gray walked lead-off batter Steve Blue. Blue stole second with one out. Joe Knoor drove in the run with a single to center field. Mathews singled sending Knoor to third base. Elmer Riggan walked. Knoor scored on Eddie Kerr RBI ground out. (2-0 KC)

Kansas City kept things going offensively in the second inning. Catcher C. J. Wells singled and stole second. Nielson bunted him to third base. Wells scored on a ground out by Blue. (3-0 KC)

Joe Almeida's solo homerun in the bottom of the 3rd broke up the shutout. (3-1 KC)

Kevin Carew added a solo homer in the 3rd to tie the game 3-3.

The home team took a 4-3 lad in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Joe Johnson doubled. Ribs Davis reached on an error (wild throw) by third baseman Steve Blue scored on the play 4-3 Washington.

Control problems plagued Washington starter Ralph Gray. Gray walked Mathews and Riggan, then uncorked a wild pitch putting the runners on second and third with no one out. Kerr singled in both runners putting Kansas City ahead 5-4.

A Washington pitching change replace Gray (5 IP 4H 6R/6ER 5BB/0SO) with left hander Wally Gilbert.

Mike Mulleavy beat out an infield single to shortstop and stole second. Steve Blue atoned a bit for his error earlier with a run scoring single. Kerr stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by pitcher Tim Neilson. (7-4 KC)

Washington scored three times to tie the game 7-7 in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Rick Boever doubled to center field off Neilson. Perry Webster came in from the bullpen to give up an infield single to Carew. (Boever) Pinch hitter Ed Clutterbuck advanced the runners with a infield out. Finney walked. Davis got a run in (Carew) with a ground out to shortstop. Almieda homered earlier almost hit another, but this drive hit off the top of the fence in deep left center field and went for a run scoring triple.

Jack Durang came in to retire John Finnenen to ground out to shortstop.

7-7 after nine inning.

In the top of the 10th inning Dan Kinkade was racked three hits and three runs getting one batter out. Riggan singled but was forced at second by Mike Jackson. Bill McCall tripled driving in Jackson. Chris Riley singled in McCall.

Rene Kee replaced Kinkade.

Pinch hitter Billy Gibbs singled to right field. Then stole second. Both runners scored on Blues base hit. Blue stole second but Lee got the final two out with no further scoring.

That gave Kansas City a four run lead and Noodles Giebell protected it for a 11-7 win.
