The Kansas City A's returned home from a successful road trip that saw them rebound from being swept at home by Los Angeles to sweep Toronto and improve to 7-2 on the road. The A's also played two extra inning games in Toronto during that series, a ten inning game and a seventeen inning thriller that left their record in extra innings at 3-2.

Bill McCall hit his third grand slam of the season and league leading 18 runs batted in and trails Danny Martin of New York in the homerun race by one; 6-5.

The A's are now 7-5 having won four straight leaving them two games behind first place Los Angeles (10-3). The Lemmings took it on the chin from (6-7) getting hammered 11-1.

Second place Washington (9-4) edged Oakland (5-8) by one 4-3.

Minnesota outlasted Toronto 6-5.

Kansas City won at home for the first time this season edging Tampa Bay 9-8.

Tampa scored two runs off Larry Garriott in the top of the first inning. Garriott walked three in the inning, five in the game over seven innings. Pete Dobson and Billy Robinson had singles in the inning. 2-0 Tampa.

The Athletics came back quickly scoring three runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

McCall singled to right. Joe Knorr doubled to left putting runners on second and third. McCall scored on an error by shortstop Ed Clancy. Riggan, who reached on the error, stole second base. Hopkins grounded to short driving in Knorr. Riggan advanced to third base with just one out. Catcher C.J. Wells got the final run of the inning with yet another ground out to Clancy.

3-2 Kansas City.

Tampa sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the 4th against Garriott and scored twice to take a 4-3 lead. Keerl singled and stole second base. Carrasco tripled him home. Dan Briley drew walk number four of the game off Garriott. Dan Briley took a called third strike. Pete Dobson went after Garrott's first pitch to him and singled driving in Carrasco. Garriott walked Stan Marquis but fanned Robinson and got Clancy to fly out.

Kansas City batters are hot right now. In the bottom of the 4th inning the A's rallied once again. McCall walked and stole second. Knorr flied to center. Riggan reached on an error by second baseman Carrasco and Dan Briley hit Reed Hopkins with a pitch to load the bases and Wells cashed in another RBI with a chopper to shortstop. Riggan scored when Clancy booted Garriott's grounder to short. Second error of the game for Clancy who had ten fielding chances in the game.

Briley was replaced by right hander Bob Ortiz for the last out of the inning.

5-4 Kansas City.

Kansas City blew the game open with four runs in the bottom of the 5th going up 9-4. John Mathews doubled, Mike Jackson bunted for a base hit putting runners on the corners with no one out. McCall was robbed of an potential double by left fielder Billy Robinson. After Robinson made the sensational catch he got the ball back in quickly forcing the runners to hold.

Knorr and Riggan both drew walks from Ortiz. The walk to Riggan forced home a run (Mathews) Jackson came home on a ground out to make it 7-4 and C.J. Wells double made it 9-4.

Tampa exposed an overworked bullpen in the ninth scoring three times but came up a run short off Jack Turang and Noodles Giebell. Giebell picked up his first save of the season.
