Kansas City in first place!!

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Kansas City began this season with high hopes after a 43-38 (.531) third place season. That was an eight game improvement over 1950 when the A's finished sixth (40-41 (.494). Based on that Kansas City fans felt the team was in good shape for a strong pennant run season.

Unfortunately the teams was sold to a group headed by Basil Rathbone Jr., the son of Shakespearian actor (also in several Sherlock Holmes movies), his brother Rodion, and uncle Jackson Rathbone. The three Rathbones, with all their baseball knowledge gleaned from watching soccer in England, acting on the advice of general manager Al (Smokey) Stove have made seven trades and been the ringleader in what has been a surprisingly active trade market in the league.

The A's started fairly slowly but of late have come on strong just when the favored leads Los Angeles and Washington have come back to the pack a bit.

Around the league Los Angeles lost the middle game of their series with Oakland 8-7. Los Angeles also lost the first game of that series as 8-9 Oakland has now won three straight.

Tampa Bay edged Washington 5-4 and Boston shutout Toronto 2-0.

Kansas City won its eighth straight to take over sole possession of first place in the American League for the first time on July 21, 1952.Kansas City starting pitcher Ross Bartell continued the streak of strong starts during the winning streak by going eight innings limiting Minnesota to five hits and three runs walking one and striking out nine.

Tony Cash came in to finish the game allowing two hits in the ninth but stranding both runners.

The A's jumped all over Minnesota starting pitcher for two runs on two hits and Capra was hurt by issuing two walks as well. John Mathews was given a lead-off walk. Mathews stole second and scored on a single by Joe Knorr. Mike Jackson followed with a double that brought in Knorr. (2-0 Kansas City)

Bartell maintained complete control through the first six innings limiting Minnesota to one infield single, one walk and striking out seven.

Kansas City increased the lead to 3-0 in the 3rd.

Bill McCall beat out an infield single and Steve Blue tripled (3rd).

in the 4th a two-out two run single by Mike Jackson made it 5-0.

John Mathews' two out double made it 7-0 in route to a 7-3 final.
