Starting pitcher Larry Barrett (4-1 3.71) went seven innings allowed seven hits and four runs walked two struck out five before giving way ro Ron Schooler and Julio Canate who picked up his third save following Schooler who did not retire any of the three batters he faced.

Kansas City dropped game one of this series 6-4 in 12 innings. The Athletics fell to 3-4 in extra innings and Oakland improved to 3-2.

Oakland scored first in the top of the first inning. Barrett walked Felix Bautista and gave up a two out run scoring double to Gary Killefer. Bautista just beat Elmer Riggans throw to catcher Chris Riley who caught the one hop throw and held on after a jarring collision with the runner.

Reed Hopkins one out single in the bottom of the first and a double by john Mathews tied the game 1-1.

The A's took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd. Marco Rodriquez walked Mike Jackson to start the inning. Jackson was forced at second by Joe Knorr. Knorr moved to second on an out and scored when Riley singled with two outs. 2-1 Kansas City.

Tiny Roberts hit his 3rd homerun of the season in the 3rd inning to tie the score 2-2. It was Roberts second homer off Kansas City pitching.

Steve Blue blasted his 6th of the season in the bottom of the 3rd. Bill McCall and Mike Jackson smacked back to back doubles for a second run in the innings and Knorr drove in Jackson with the 3rdrun with a single.

Gilberto Barrios took over for Rodriquez and gave Oakland four and a third innings of relief allowing two singles and one unearned run to keep the score close.

Oakland made it 5-3 in the 5th. Roberts, batting .253 for the season, but .318 against KC (7 hits in 23 at bats five runs scored 3RBI 2 Hrs.) doubled and scored on a double by Felix Bautista.

Bottom of the 5th; Barrios walked Mathews who stole second. Mathews moved to third on a grounder to first by McCall and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Jackson. Jackson has 24 runs batted in now this season.

Bautista hit a solo homerun for Oakland in the 8th. Bautista is five for eight in this series.

Larry Garriott got the final two outs in the eighth.

Kansas City went on to win 9-6 and maintained their two game lead over Washington, Los Angeles and red hot Tamp Bay, winners of five straight.
