Washington sweeps Detroit

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Washington big three pitched the first place Washington Senators to a sweep of the struggling Detroit Tigers with an 8-4 victory in game three of their series at Griffith Stadium. Mike Dugdale and Eddie O'Meara both picked up their third win of the season in the first two games of the series.

Dugdale pitched 7.1 innings in game one allowing one run on six hits and O'Meara went eight innings in the second game allowing one run on seven hits. Radford who had suffered two no-decisions in his first two starts outdid both of them going 7.2 shutout innings allowing just two hits, two walks and sprinkling in four strikeouts.

Radford walked Joe Orie with one out in the first inning then retired the next seventeen straight batters. Radford got some good defensive help behind him. Shortstop Craig Andersen made a great play robbing Kurt Brown of a hit to end the 5th.

Orie led off the 7th was the first Detroit hit but Anderson and Hanyzewski turned a slick double play behind him to end that inning.

Washington score a run in the 2nd inning off Detroit starter Artie Rogers. A pair of singles by John Murray and Rodney Alexander put runners on first and third with no outs. Slumping Antonio Pugh hit into a double play with Murray scoring pit Washington ahead 1-0 and that held up for seven innings.

Radford walked Trable with one out in the 8th inning and with two out a single to Jim Powell. He departed for veteran Bennie Daniels who secured the final out, a flyball to center field by Arnold Markham.

Daniels led of the Senators half of the inning with a solid line drive single to left field. Marv Dashiell doubled off the left field wall but Daniels ran out of gas between second and third and was held up.Tom Hanyzewski picked up two RBI with a single up the middle. 3-0 Washington and the runs came in handy.

Daniels jad no more luck with Joe Orie than Radford did giving up a one out double (2 for 3w/one walk). Fyhie made a big second out grounding to shortstop. Derek Goodman hit a two run two out homerun off Daniels to pull Detroit to within one run but the unflappable Daniels got Traber to fly out to George Brown in center to end the game.

Washington lead the Al by two games as Cleveland kept pace by downing Boston 8-4. Minnesota outscored Oakland 6-2 and Tampa Bay out slugged the Yankees 10-8.
