Montreal 4 Colorado 0

Montreal and Colorado began a three game series with first place on the line at Crayon Stadium in Denver, Colorado. Both teams sent capable pitchers to the mound for the big opener.

Left hander Mile Marshall for Montreal and right hander Doc Bailey for the home team.

Both pitched extraordinarily well. Bailey issued only two walks over the first six innings, a one out walk to Harlan Pickett in the second, wiped out by a double play and a two out walk in the fourth to Mark Hisner who was left on base when Burke struck out.

Marshal scattered six hits over nine innings. Allan Inks doubled with two outs in the first inning and Marshall walked Bobby Sutcliffe. Rex Miley stranded them by grounding out to shortstop Tommy Burke. Steve Zuber had a one out single in the second but was immediately wiped out by a double play initiated by second baseman Buddy Mancuso.

After getting the side out in order in the third right fielder Mitch Reichardt robbed Sutcliffe of extra bases with one out in the fourth inning. The defensive gem became all the more important when Miley doubled.

Marshall exited the inning still in a scoreless tie by getting Canale to pop out to third base man Ed Brewster in foul territory.

The fifth saw Candy Amor get a one out single. Bailey bunted him to second at the cost of the second out. Marshall pitched around Ben Perez by walking him and got Todd Jones to hit a liner right at Reichardt in right field to end that inning.

Inks had his second hit of the game in the six inning, a single, and Amor came up with his second hit in the seventh, but Inks was left on base and Amor was caught stealing.

Bailey still had a no hitter going into the seventh. Will Rigney pinch hit for Reichardt and singled breaking up the no hit bid. Mark Hisner followed with Montreal's second hit another single. Rigney was caught stealing (2-5) for the first out. Hisner did steal second base but was left there as Burke fouled out to catcher Irish Canale and Pickett lined out to left fielder Allan Inks.

Tim Wiltse took over for Bailey after the seventh inning. He was not the complete puzzle to Montreal hitters that Bailey was. Bench had a one out single in the eighth. Colorado got a runer on base in their half of the eighth but Mancuso started the Expos secpond double play after making a great stop of a hot smash hit by Inks.

Wiltse fell apart in the top of the ninth.

Pinch hitter Doe Brackens doubled. Wiltse walked hisner and Burke to load the bases. Pickett hit a high bouncer to first base that got the first run of the game home (Brackens). Ken Phillips singled driving in Hisner and Burke to make it 3-0. and Dereek Heard singled in the final run to put Montreal on top by four.

And that was the final; 4-0 Montreal ...Winning pitcher Marshall 5-1.. losing pitcher Wiltse 0-1.

The win moved montreal into a tie for first with the Crayons with two games remaining in the seires.

Around the league second place Pittsburgh won its third straight, Third place Chicago, it second straight and seventh place Arizona all won by a score of 5-4.
