Disabled list ==> Injury list

Post by Kayarayak »

Major league baseball now puts players who can't play on an 'Injury list' (IL). Would it be possible, without too much effort, to rebrand SimDynasty's 'disabled' lists? A disability is not really the same thing as an injury.

Disabled meaning:

We have had in MLB a pitcher missing a hand, colorblind players, players who can still hit but can't run much (yay designated hitter rule), They were all 'disabled' in one definition or another, but they were still in the lineup.

Disabled means unable to function. Players are put on the disabled list when they're unable to function. Many players get injured but still play. It's when that injury gets to a certain level that you can't function anymore.

You can function as pitcher with one arm. You can hit with color blindness. That can handicap you in certain situations, but you're not disabled.

every pro league uses the injured designation, including the one we are emulating, why are we arguing this? if this is an easy technical change it's a no brainer

I didn't argue against changing it. Go ahead and change the name.

It was the OP's statement about a disability versus an injury that I felt needed to be addressed. I guessed that he was mistakenly using the wrong definition for disability given the situation. MLB changed supposedly changed the name for that exact reason, which was that people were confusing the word disabled with a permanent disability. His statement about Jim Abbott proved that he was indeed using the wrong one. Jim Abbott was able to pitch, so technically, he wasn't really disabled since it didn't prevent him for normal achievement.

Disability
The condition of being disabled; incapacity.
The period of such a condition.
A disadvantage or deficiency, especially a physical or mental impairment that interferes with or prevents normal achievement in a particular area.

Anyways, there's a reason why it was originally named the disabled list. An injured list would be technically wrong since you can play injured, and many players especially in the early to mid part of the 1900's did in fact play injured. Even today many players play injured. The can't play if they're disabled, and that's why they were put on a disabled list.
