Kid Gleason League 9/25/1950

Post by basilrathbonejr »

With six games to go, the American League pennant race has tightened up considerably thanks a September slump by Boston, losers of seven straight and seven of nine.

A lot can be credited to the opposition just playing better and some can be attributed to injuries to relief pitchers Larry Hriniak, Walter Rose and Billy Taylor forcing a total revision of the bull pen and to starting catcher Buddy Kracher and left fielder Eddie Naranjo.

Seattle and Kansas City, both at 41-34, have kept the pressure on Boston and taken advantage of the BeanEaters' slump to pull ahead of Boston.

Kansas City edged Toronto 5-3. Detroit defeated New York 7-1 and Los Angeles inched by Oakland 5-4.

In a significant series between Seattle and Slumping Boston, Seattle took game one 8-0. Hub Gibson evened his season's record at 5-5 going the distance and shutting out Boston on seven hits. Seattle knocked out Boston's starter, Chauncey Murray LP 4-9, after four innings tagging him for five runs on six hits.

Seattle had three homeruns in the game. Steve Didier (10th), Bob Pryor (12th), and Ed Carey (5th).

Seattle was in first place by one full game.

Game Two

Boston took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off losing pitcher Bill Kennedy (3-5) who went 7.1 innings gave u three runs on seven hits.

The BeanEaters added a run in the fourth inning on a single by Bryan Perez that just got by second baseman Jeff Ramsdell and a double by Mark Indermill. 2-0 Boston.

Boston starting pitcher Blaze O'Connell went seven innings giving up one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. O'Connell did not allow a run until the 8th inning when Harry Foley tripled and scored on a infield ground out by Steve Didier to make it a one-run game; 2-1.

Boston scored two big runs in the eighth inning thanks to some clutch late inning hitting. Mark Skowron singled and stole second base signaling the end for Kennedy and the arrival of Tom Hensley who walked the first batter he fced, Jim Glauber. Both runners advanced on a ground out by Perez and then both socred on a single by Alex Flaherty to put Boston up 4-1.

With Larry Hriniak on the disabled list, Ryan Ward got the call in the ninth inning.

Ryan walked Bert Cook with one out and Pat Fluhrer singled putting runners on first and second with one out.

Ed Carey fouled out to third baseman Mark Skowron reaching into the stands for the foul ball. Ward walked pinch hitter Joe Walker to load the bases with two outs. Harry Foley singled home Perry to make the score 4-2. Jeff Ramsdell grounded out to Skowron to end the game and give Ward his first save of the year.

Someone posted Rudyard Kipling's poem 'If'' on the BeanEters bulletin board before game three and highlighted verse six and the final verse.

''If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch and catch
And lose, and start all over again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss.

Final verse;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds of distance run
Yours is the Earth and everything in it,
And- whats' more is ---you'll be a man my sun.''

The BeanEaters were looking in effect for nine innings of total effort from all aboard. Nothing less.

The overflow crow was unusually quite through the early innings and their state of mind was not enhanced in the bottom of the second when Seattle took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Steve Didier, off Paul Pickett.

Seattel starting pitcher Emil Anderson was very sharp throuth the first four innings shutting down Boston on two hits with three strikeouts. Second baseman Jim Glauber committed an error in the top of the forth to put Bert Cook on base but Pickett got Didier to ground into a double play arod the hormn started by Skowron.

Boston bats came alive in the fifth inning.

Anderson walked Albie Crowell to start the inning and Jose Nocosia simgled to left foeld. A possible big inning seemed to be wiped out when catcher Steve Allenson grounded back to Anderson who stated a 1-6-3 doube play.

But Boston did not go weakly into the night. Pickett batted for himself and singled in Crowell with the tying run. Pickett then ran the bases hard to score on a double by shortstop Greg Cruz that put Boston in front 2-1.

That lead quickly evaporated because Cliff Gossage hit his 5th homerun of the season in the sixth inning for Seattle tying the game 2-2.

Picket began the 7th inning still on the mound but gave up an infield single to Frank Cronin, who stole second base.

Gossage singled to left. Cronin was held at third base on the play.

Thirty year old rookie George Lee, recently called up by Boston, replaced Pickett on the mound.

Gossage stole second base and catcher Chris Niefendauer threw the ball into centerfield for an error that let Cronin score. Boston committed three errors in the game.

The unruffled Lee then surrendered a two run homerun to Ed Corey, his second of the seroes and 6th of the season seemingly sealing the game and handing Boston yet another loss.

Bull Russell took over in the eighth for Seattle. Boston has had some good luck against the big righthander this season and did so again.

Greg Cruz led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Russell then walked Skowron and Glauber to load the bases and Bryan Perez smacked his 11th homerun and second grand slam this season to put Boston in front 6-5.

Neal Caveney rep, aced Russell who did not retire a single batter giving up two hits and two walks for four runs.

Caveney retired Indermill on a ground out. Alex Flaherty singled to keep the inning moving and rookie Norm Bauer picked up his first major league hit a single to left field, sending Flaherty to third base. Pinch hitter Hilton Smith singeld in a big insurance run to make the score 7-5 and Ryan Ward took over to close it out.

Ward struggled in his first outing in the closer role but dominated this time out. Ramsdell who grounded out to give Ward his forst save led off the inning with a gound out to Skowron at third base and Ward struck out the next two batters for his second save putting Boston back in first place by one game after all their problems and woes.

Boston took the season series from Seattle 7-5.

George Lee was the winning pitcher (1-0).

Boston will have to be road warriors because all six of their remaining games are on the road.....
