10 INNINGS

Boston is now 5-0 in extra innings...Detroit fell to 0-2 in extras...

Boston is 37-24 has won eight of its last ten and five straight. That has allowed them to build a four game lead over Seattle (33-28), losers of five straight games and the Kansas City Komets (33-28) who have taken advantage of the slump by Seattle to pull themselves into a tie for second place by winning six of their last ten games.

Boston starting pitcher Fred Spring, now 6-8, went nine innings of the ten innings, gave up one run on two hits, but issued six walks and struck out eight. Spring allowed a lead off double to Bert Wallace in the fifth inning when etroit socred its only run. An error by Spring moved Wallace to third base where he was able to score on a ground out by pitcher Woodie Ley.

The games first run came in the top of the first inning when Boston took a 1-0 lead. Ley struck out thefirst two batters, Skowron and Indermill, before Bryan Perez singled and stole second base. Perez scored on a Alex Flaherty single to left field.

Boston had chances to extend their lead throughout the game but Woodie Ley did not give up another run after the first inning, going eight and two-thrids innings and was charged with one run on seven hits walked three and struck out six.

Ley retired the side in order in the scond and third innings, then issued a two out walk to Cliff Wise in the fourth. Jose Nicosia flied out to end the threat.

Boston had three straight two out singles by Spring, Mark Skowron and Mark Indermill, but Spring was thrown out at the plate to end the inning by left fielder Larry Dickson.

In the sixth inning Alex Flaherty singled with one out but Cliff Wise grounded into a inning ending double play amd in the seventh Cruz walked with two out out walk, but was caught stealing on a pitch out by catcher Johnny Obradovich.

Ley after all the effort to get there could not get through the ninth inning. Flaherty walked with one out but was caught stealing by Obradovich who held Boston, a team that likes to run to two stolen bases, and had two caught stealings to his credit.

Wise singled and succesfully stole second on a close play.

That brought Ley's efforts to an end and Scott Bigbee came in to face pinch hitter Joe Clements. Clements bounced back to Bigbee to end the inning.

Bigbee gave up a lead off homerun to Greg Cruz (9th) in the 10th inning that put Boston ahead 2-1. It was the league leading 14th homer allowed by Bigbee in just 41.1innings pitched.

Larry Hriniak closed out the game in the bottom of the 10th for his 14th save in 14 opportunities.
