Four American League teams are directly involved in the American League pennant race. Boston, Seattle, Kansas City and Detroit are those teams their team batting and pitching stats are revealing in the story of why they are there.

Boston's pitching has been the major reason they have flourished lately. The staff ERA of 3.38, down from 3.47 earlier in the month is the leading reason and the team batting average of .251 is tied with Toronto for fourth and their 67 homeruns is tied with Toronto for the most in the American League.

Seattle's pitching has been steadfast as well (3.65) whilke their hitting (.248) has been the worst in the league. Kansas City is hitting a league best .262 with a league best 114 stolen bases compared to a middle of the pact team ERA of 4.10.

BOSTON 6 DETROIT 1

Jim Glauber went four for four with two doubles as a part of Boston's twelve hit attack in game two of their series with Detroit.

Detroit fell to 31-31 seven games out with their second straight loss.

Boston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning to go ahead 1-0. Mark Skowron singled to centerfield and Jim Glauber picked up the first of his four hits in the game, a double to right field driving in the run.

Detroit tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Catcher Johnny Obradovich doubled to right field, advanced to third base on an infield out and tagged ad scored on a flyball by Wilson Miceli.

Boston took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. Bryan Perez singled to right field, Buddy Kracher single Perez to third base. Mark Indermill's slow roller back to the pitcher advanced Kracher to second. Perez held up at third base.Detroit shortstop Scott Jurisich robbed Cliff Wise of a hit with a great fielding play and throw to first. Perez scored the go ahead run on the play. 2-1 Boston. Kracher went to third base on the play and scored on Albie Crowell's single to make it 3-1.

Boston used four pitchers in the game. Starting pitcher Dave Long went five and two-thirds innings for the win (6-1) allowing one run on seven hits one walk and six strikeouts.

Chris Hughson got the final out in the sixth inning. Lane retired the first two batters in routine fashion, then walked Keith Rasmussen who went to third on a single by Bert Wallace putting runners on first and third with two outs.

Rookie Chris Hughson made his second major league appearance with runners on first and third and two out and did a good job. He got Scott Jurisich to ground out to second baseman Jim Glauber to end the inning and keep the score at 3-1.

Boston then added two more runs in the seventh to go up 5-1. Bryan Perez stroked a single and Jim Glauber whose four hits gave him a season high ten total bases in the game hit his 5th homerun of the season.

Cliff Wise hit his 6th of the season in the 8th inning off Jamie Dubois (3rd allowed in 31.1) to make the final score 6-1.

Left hander Bill Cruthers pitched the seventh recording a strikeout and Billy Taylor pitched two innings allowing one single and striking out three batters with an overpowering fastball.
