Detroit 3 Boston 1

First place Detroit earned a 3-1 victory over third place Boston in game one of a three game home series for the Tigers. Detroit goes into the series at 34-24 (.586) one game in front of Baltimore and two ahead of Boston.

Baltimore defeated Los Angeles 6-3 to keep pace with the front running Tigers.

Josh Sexton started for Detroit. Sexton was extremely sharp retiring the first twelve consecutive batters before John Freed hit a lead-off homerun in the 5th inning to spoil both the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing of the bat. The homerun cut Detroit's lead in the game to one run, 2-1.

Those runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning by the Tigers off right hander Jack Schmandt with two outs. Al Scarsella doubled, his 15th this season, Schmandt walked Mike Harris on a disputed 3-2 pitch and catcher Dave Colborn, batting .272, lined his 7th double of the campaign into the left field corner scoring both Scarsella and Harris standing up.

Sexton did not waver a bit the rest of the way limiting the Red Hawks to three scratch singles, one on the infield striking out six in the game to run his record to 5-1. Schmandt went seven innings and took the loss. He is now 5-2.

Detroit 7 Boston 5

Detroit took game two and the series 7-5 behind fifth starter Ray Palmer. Palmer, now 3-5 with a 4.57 ERA went 6.1 innings allowed six hits five runs gave up six bases on balls and fanned five.

Boston took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a deep sacrifice fly to right field by Phil Smith.

The Red Hawks added a run in the 3rd inning. Calvin Scarce doubled to right field and Dick Gumpert singled him in.

2-0 Boston.

Detroit got on the scoreboard in the 5th inning off Brain Gallagher. Gallagher walked newcomer Pumsie Simpson and Simpson came around to score from first base on adouble by Orlando Chambliss. Palmer tried to sacrifce bunt twice, fouling off both pitches, then blooped a double down the right field line off the chalk to tie the game 2-2.

Bad pitching luck for Gallagher. More of the same kind of luck for the thirty two year old right hander as Bill Stackhouse hit a soft humpback liner into shallow cwenter field for a run scoring single putting the Tigers in front 3-2.

Stackhouse stole second on the frustrated Gallagher who walked Matt Steiber one pitch later putting runners on first and second with two outs. Dave Colborn came through with his second two out run scoring single of the game to make it 4-2 Detroit.

Pitcher Ray Palmer (two for three in the game) lined a solid single to right field. Santiago and Scarcella both walked and Stackhouse drove in two more with a double to left field finishing Gallagher. Jack Law came in to retire Matt Sieber on a ground out to second.

in the seventh Palmer lost his controll and wlked three straight batters (six in the game); Smith, Fazio and Tiatt, all all three scored on a ringing double by Scarce.

Andy Hahn, came on for the fourth consecutiove game with one out, walked Gumpert, but got Julio Ducey to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

Boston then led 7-5 and won it by that score when Ray Gillespie came on and goit the fianl three outs in the ninth for his 16th save.
