Tigers 4 New York 2

Detroit won its sixth straight downing the struggling New York Maulers 4-2. Tom Blass made his first start as a Tiger. Blass, a 35 year old right handed starting pitcher, was used primarily as a relief pitcher with Cincinnati making 60 relief appearances and only seven starts in two seasons with the Scotsmen. He compiled a 3-10 record with a 4.01 ERA.

The Tigers sent twenty seven year old rookie right hander Charlie Leary to Cincinnati. Leary was seldom used by Detroit appearing in only four games with Detroit (1-0 4.91 ERA).

Detroit has been busy on the trade market making another trade with Cincinnati involving their number one pick in the draft, and infielder Ellis Kelly, (.385 2 Hrs 6 RBI for second baseman Dode Pierce (.244 3 Hs 19 RBI)

The Tigers made a trade with Pittsburgh involving their first round draft pick, outfielder Corky Luce (.333 1 Hr. 6 RBI) and minor league pitcher Joel Siebert for first baseman Pumpsie Simpson hitting .191 w/ 4 Hrs and 24 runs batted in.

Blass paid immediate dividends going eight innings giving up two runs on five hits no walks and eight strikeouts. Ray Gillespie pitched a scoreless ninth inning to garner his league leading 18th save (tied with Oakland's Angus Young ).

Detroit threatened in the first getting two base runners but lost both runners attempting to steal. Catcher Reggie Cabrera threw out three of six base stealers in this game.

In the bottom of the first Blass allowed one hit, a one out single by Orlando Hinton, but nothing else as the first inning ended scoreless.

The second inning saw Detroit draw first blood in the game. Matt Siebler reached on an error by New York shortstop Orlando Hinton and stole second base. Siebler went to third base on Ed White's 4-3 ground out. Simpson walked and stole second putting runners on second and third with one out. Rookie outfielder Nick Gray got his first major league RBI with a ground ball to shortstop that scored Simpson.

2-0 Detroit.

Xavier Covington singlecd to start a New york uprising in the bottom of the second inning Covongton came in to score on Reggie Cabrera's two out single. 2-1 Detroit.

Deteroit scored two runs in the 3rd inning increasing the score to 4-1. Sims singled to left and Scarsella doubled to left putting runners on second and tird with nobody out. Harris popped out leavuing both where they were. Siebler's grounder to shortstop brought in Sims and Ed White's two out singled plated Scarsella with the second run.

A two base error on Sims at third put Hinton on second with no outs for Newq York to start the 6th. Luis Quinlan singled him into score. 4-2 Detroit.Earl Ray pitched the 8th for New York and Butch King the ninth keeping the score the same.

Ray Gillespie took over in the ninth for Detroit and earned his 18th save of the season tying him with Oakland's Angus young for the league lead in saves.

Oakland 8 Baltimore 0

Oakland has taken two straight for the Birds improving their recvord to 34-28 four games back. The A's have won seven of their last ten.

Don Henley went the distance for Oakland improving to 7-3 on the season shuting out Baltimore on four hits. Henley issued two walks and had
four strikeouts

Keith Urban hit a two run homer and tripled in the game and Eric Clapton added a two run homerun.
