Tigers 3 New York 2

The Detroit Tigers have rolled to seven consecutive wins, the last three against the New York Maulers who with the loss dropped to 32-31 (.509) seven games behind Detroit.

Detroit scored early in game three of their series with New York. Looking for a sweep the Tigers struck in the first inning on a homerun by right fielder Mike Harris (4th) off Roberto Carroll (9th allowed).

In the third inning the top of the Detroit batted for the second time off Carroll and lead off batter Davey Santiago walked with two outs. Harris singled to left for his second hit of the game sending Santiago hustling around to third base. Al Scarbella singled in the run.

2-0 Detroit.

The AL league homerun and RBI leader (second in batting) finally did some damage hitting his 15th homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.

New York had Sexton on the ropes in the 5th inning when Carroll singled and Hujduk walked. Sexton escaped by getting and Mike Hilton to ground into a 4-6-3 double play started by new second baseman Dode Pierce.

As usual of late the Detroitoffense was able to add on to its lead and did so again in the bottom of that 5th inning.

Harris walked. Scarsella and Strieber both singled. Harris scored to make the score 3-1.

New York's Paddy Hujduk singled in a run in the 7th to cut the lead to one; 3-2.

In the 8th Al Young singled to right field bringing up Tubby Keely again representing the go ahead run. Andy Hahn who took over for Sexton in the sixth to get the final out got the slugger to hit the ball to Pierce once again and he started the Tigers second and biggest double play of the game.

Hahn closed out the ninth without incident picking up his third save.

Final score; Tigers 3 Maulers 2.....

During the New York series, the Tigers closest pursuers, the Baltimore Birds, were losing three straight to the red hot Oakland A's winners of eight of their last ten.

That streak has propelled the A's into a second place tie with Baltimore.

Oakland got outstanding pitching during the series from its starters. Glenn Frey (7-4) went eight innings in game one allowing five hits and two runs with ten strikeouts. Angus Young took care of the ninth inning and earned his 18th save of the season.

In games two and three Oakland starters went the distance. Don Henley (7-3) pitched a four hit shutout 2 walks, four strikeouts in the 8-0 win in the second game and Roger Hodgen (5-2) allowed just four hits and one run in game three three walks and seven strikeouts in a 7-1 win..

Doc Weaver (2nd), Keith Urban (9th) Eric Clapton (10th) and Jimmy Page (5th) all homered in the series for the on rushing Oakland ball club.
