Seattle wins fifth straight to climb over .500

Post by lgcrowder67 »

The Seattle Mariners have been playing very well of late, winning five straight games, to boost their record to 18-17, one game over .500, five games behind front running Kansas City, and tied with Detroit one game behind third place Washington. The Mariners have hit and pitched well as is usually the case on a hit streak by most teams. The Mariners have batted .304 over those five games scoring 30 runs (six runs a game average)and the pitchers have chipped in with a staff ERA of 2.80 (14 earned runs in 45 innings pitched).

Five batters have hit a total of 9 homeruns to provide a new source of run production to the offense.

Mike Moore won for the second time during the winning streak. Moore went eight innings (3 runs on five hits) to defeat Boston for his fourth win in his last start and went seven and two thirds against Baltimore giving up five hits two runs walked three struck out six to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Seattle lead off man Andy Pendergast proved to be quite a pest for Baltimore reaching base five times to score three times (two hits/two walks and an error and stole three bases). Pendergast singled to right field in the first inning, stole second and scored on a ground out to first base.

Baltimore tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Barron.

Pendergast homered in the third inning off Ed Cypert to put Seattle back in front 3-2.

Baltimore came back and tied it for a second time in the 7th. Barron singled to left field. Monte Clapp singled past the shortstop Walt Papish. Barron was thrown out at third base by left fielder Don Wehrmiester. Clapp stole second and went on to third on a bad throw by catcher Steve Cordero. Sadie Sipec got the run in with a ground ball to Papish.

Seattle scored two big runs in the 8th inning to go ahead 4-2.

Pendergast reached again, this time on an error by Clapp, at shortstop. Pendergast stole second and scored on a single by Paul Atwood.

Atwood was caught stealing and Jim Naymick struck out. Wehrmeister drew a two out walk and stole second base (fourth steal of the game for Seattle) and he scored on a single by back up catcher Ralph Wood.

Seattle added an insurance run in the 9th. Francis Fox tripled to finish Cypert and John Robertson came in and let the run come in on a single by catcher Steve Cordero.

Doug Quinby picked up his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.
