Detroit takes game one in Oakland

Detroit 9 Oakland 4

Detroit takes game one of a three game series in Oakland. Game one took place on a sunny afternoon in Oakland before a capacity crowd that was fully engaged and loud.

The game began at 3:02 in the afternoon and ended three hours and nineteen minutes later at 6:21.

In the Detroit first inning Oakland starter allowed two singles, a single to left field by Davey Santiago and a single by Harris to left field putting runners on first and third with no one out Henley escaped by getting Scarsella to fly out to short left field. Harris was caught stealing (2-6) by catcher Steven Stills. Colborn field out to end the inning.

Oakland first inning; Doc Watson brought the large crowd to its feet with a line drive over the left field fence putting Oakland ahead 1-0. It was Watson's 3rd of the season and the 5th hit off Blass this season.

Both teams played exception defense throughout the game amnd it began in earnest in this inning. Eric Clapton and Lee Rettinaur single putting runners on first and second with no one out. Jimmy Page's bid for an extra base hit was taken away on a spectacular catch in left field by Davey Santiago. Both runners failed to advance. Shortstop Ed White started a double play that brought the inning to an end.

1-0 Oakland.

Dode Pearce opened the second for Detroit with a double down the right foield line. Neill Norman drew the first walk of the game from Henley. Simpson struck out. Orlando Chambliss doubled past right fielder Robert Cray when Cray misplayed the hop. Pearce scored to tie the game. Cray threw out Norman at the plate to keep the game tied.

In the third inning a complete loss of controll by Henley turned the game around. Henley had walked only 35 batters in 95.1 innings pitched, walked five in this inning alone and gave up one hit, a single to Harris, the second batter of the inning. Henley walked Santiago, Scarcella and Colborn forcing in a run. Harris scored the second run of the inning on a ground out to third base by Pearce. After fanning Simpson, Henley walked Orlando Chambliss (.196) to force in another run.

Detroit scored three runs on one hit and left the bases loaded.

in the 4th inning Detroit increased its lead to 6-1 knocking out Henley replaced by Paul Vickers. Harris singled and Al Scarbella tripled in the run off Henley. Colborn single off Vickers driving in Scarcella. Vickers retired the next three straight batters to end the inning.

Blass retired fifteen of sixteen batters at one point after that. That streak was ended by long homerun by Eric Clapton (12th) off Blass, the 6th off Blass, second in this game.

Blass suddenly was the pitcher who could not find the plate issuing walks to Stills, Cray and Urban (sounds like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but isn't) to force in a run for Oakland (Stills). The last batter Blass faced was pinch hitter Leo Kottke who to hit into a key double play started again by Pearce at second base. Stills scored on the play.

Andy Hahn came in and struck out Doc Watson to end the inning.

6-4 Detroit after seven innings.

Joe Crandall, a waiver pickup from Cincinnati, made his Tiger debut in the eighth. Crandall gave up one hit, a single to Clapton, who was thrown out stealing by Colborn. Crandall struck out Jimmy Page to end the inning.

The top of the ninth saw Detoit put the game on ice .

Dave Colborn homered off Jeff Cerano. The ninth for Colborn and the first hit off Cerano this season.
Dode Pearce followed with his 4th off Herb Pederson (5th allowed) to make the final score 9-4 Detroit.

Detroit extended its grip on first place back to four games.
