Post by jacktoast »

Tigers 6 Oakland 4

The big home series for Oakland has not gone the way the red hot A's have wanted losing game one 9-4 and the second 6-4 before two large exuberant crowds that were taken out of the game early in both games muting the home field advantage quickly.

Roger Hodgson (Oakland starter) and the Tigers Jack Sexton were both perfect through the first three innings. The Tigers got things going in the top of the fourth inning. Lead-off batter Davey Santiago singled and stole his 21st base putting himself in scoring position for Al Scarsella to drive him in with a double.

1-0 Detroit.

Hodgson wasn't out of the woods yet issued a walk to Matt Steibler and Bill Stackhouse singled to center field driving in Scarsella. 2-0 Detroit with Siebler advancing to third base. Catcher Dave Colborn singled him in to up the score to 3-0.

Leo Kottke hit a solo homerun (7th) with no one on ((11th off Sexton)...3-1 Detroit.

Stackhouse's solo homerun in the 8th inning made it 4-1

Sexton gave up two runs in the eight inning as Oakland climbed back in 4-3.

Sills singled, was forced at second by J.J. Cole. Lee Rittenour picked up an RBI with a double down the right field line. Shortstop Ed White robbed Kottke of a hit before Urban grounded a single up the middle to score Rittenour. Matt Siebler hit a solo homerun in the 8th to give Derroit some breathing room.Andy Hahn made his 35th appearance when Sexton ( 6IP + 8 hits 3 earned runs 0 walks four strikeouts.) was taken out after giving up two hits to start the inning by Kottke (double) and a single by Urban.

Andy Hahn took over and retrired Clapton on a routine fly to right fielder Mike Harris and got a double play 5-4-3 to end the inning.

6-4 Detroit.

Ray Gillespie picked up his league leading 19th save with a perfect ninth inning.

Detroit at 42-35 has a five game lead over both Oakland and Boston, the winners of four straight.
