Detroit Sweeps Oakland

The Detroit Tigers journeyed to Athletic Stadium in Oakland, California to take on the hottest team in the league, the Oakland Athletics. The Tigers won game one 8-4 behind Tom Blass (3-5). The took game two 6-4. The winning pitcher was Jack Sexton (7-1) and they sent right hander Johnny Ward (7-2) out to secure a sweep.

Amos Lee who has had a subpar year (0-6 6.43 ERA) to the mound to stop the bleeding.



Lee gave up a solo homerun (the 9th he has allowed this season, to Bill Stackhouse with one out in the top of the 2nd inning. 1-0 Detroit.

Joe Walsh got the A's all even in the bottom of the second with his 5th of the season. Ward has now allowed 10. Game tied 1-1.

Eric Clapton doubled with one out in the bottom of the third and Leo Koppke singled to right driving him in. Oakland takes a 2-1 lead.

Oakland added to that lead in the bottom of the 5th inning Jimmy Page led off with a singled to left and Clapton involved himself in the scoring once again with a RBI single to center field. 3-1 Oakland and the A's were looking good at this point.

Ward left after six innings having allowed four runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeout.

Out of the bullpen came Ray Palmer, a starter most of the season, to go two scoreless innings, the 7th and 8th, giving up just one hit and recording one strikeout and most importantly kept the score the same.

In the top of the 9th the A's sent closer Angus Young to the mound for his potential league leading 20th save.

Things did not work out for him. A pair of pinch hitter got to him for hitsd. Walt Garcia, fighting for a spot on the playoff roster, singled and Ed White doubled in a run and putting the tying run in scoring position with one out. Young uncorked a wild pitch moving White to third.Al Scarsella tripled tying the game. young departed after just one-third of an inning two runs in and responsible for the runner on Harris' grounder to short got Scarsella home with the go ahead run, The Tigers led 5-4 with three outs to get.

They gave the ball to their closer Ray Gillespie with a chance at HIS 20th save.

Pinch hitter Lee Rittenour ground out 6-3. 1 0ut.

jimmy P[age waited out a walk after a long at bat seeing nine pitches from Gillespie. Clapton the next batter grounded to second ...two out.....

Next up was Leo Koppke, four for nine in the series with a double and a homer. Gillespie struck out Koppke for save number 20 and the sweep!

Detroit took a six game lead over Oakland and on coming Boston who took two of three from Minnesota.
