Mariners continue their run...winning streak to six,

Post by lgcrowder67 »

The Seattle Mariners made news on and off the field. They added three pitchers and a pinch hitter to their roster by trading reliever Jumbo Minutelli (1-2 8.10) to St Louis for starting pitcher Sam Clark, a right hander with St. Louis' AAA club, The Mariners also traded 35 year old left fielder Don Wehrmiester (.293 2 8) to Minnesota for 27 year old left fielder Gary Davis (.245 3 11).

Shortstop Whitey Scherain, pitchers Joe Walker, who won his last start, and Charlie Lieberthal went down and catcher/pinch hitter Snuffy Kelleher, pitchers Sam Clark, acquired from St. Louis for Jumbo Minutelli, and Ewald Breeden came up to join the big club.

Breeden made his first start for Seattle in Baltimore in game three of the three game series there. The twenty five year old right hander went eight innings allowed four hits and one unearned run walked two and struck out five. Breeden extended Seattle's winning streak to six games and the win combined with losses by both first place Kansas City and second place Minnesota allowed Seattle and Detroit who beat Kansas City to both move within four games of first and remained one game behind Washington who took a 2-1 victory over Chicago.

Red hot hitting left fielder Andy Pendegast tripled and homered (3rd) and catcher Steve Cordero hit his fourth of the season to hang the loss on Paul Carey (1-5).

Doug Quinby picked up his fourth save.
