Tigers prepare to redeem themselves...

The 1950 Detroit Tiger season was a memorable one until the Oakland Athletics spoiled the ending by upsetting the favored Tigers in six games. In those six games the Athletics completely mauled the team with the leagues best record (52-29), six All Stars; Al Scarsella 2B, Bill Stackhouse 3B, C Dave Colborn, CF Matt Siebler, SP Bill Ardoin, and closer Ray Gillespie. four Gold Glove winners; catcher Dave Colborn, LF Davey Santiago, CF Siegler, and now retired shortstop Orlando Chamblis, the MVP, Al Scarcella, and the Fireman of the year; Ray Gillespie.

Milwaukee took the World Series crown in seven games after the two teams split the first six with each winning three in a row, first Milwaukee, the then stubborn A's. The outcome was not decided until Casey Gianelli's two run single in the bottom of the 8th inning of the seventh game.

Colborn and outfielder Mike Harris finished 3rd and 5th in the MVP voting. Ardoin and Jack Sexton, who were held out of the last two starts, finished 2nd and 5rh in the Cy Young Award race.

The Tigers returned the pitching staff; Ardoin 9-3, Jack Sexton 8-1, Tom Blass (1-5 w/Cincinnati..3-0 with Detroit), Kenny Rainwater 6-5, and Johnny Ward 7-4 comprise the starting staff and Gillespie who led the league with 21 saves, anchors a bullpen along with Andy Hahn 3-2, Joe Crandall (2-8 w/Cincinnati...3-1 w/Detroit), Julio Ewing 3-4 in 36 games with a 2.74 in what he felt like was a poor year for him, and Ray Palmer 5-5.

Rookie Rick Seoane, Mark Romero, Owen Boggs, Bobby Scott, Oscar Walsh and Tommy Trowbridge are the minor league depth the Tigers will bank on for injury replacements

Colborn ((10 44 291) and Earl Reed ((267 2 16) are the catchers. Veteran minor leaguers Ray McMullin and Bobby Higgins are insurance in case an injury happens to one of the catchers again..

At first base Claude Cosman (.256 1 24 in 56 games, spent a good portion of the season on the disabled list and Pumpsie Simpson (.189 4 24) a good defender but a major disappointment with the bat will compete for playing time.

Al Scarcella be the second baseman, with the retirement of Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Chambliss Dode Pearce ((.371 4 27 w/Detroit... .244 3 19 w/Cincinnati) Ed White .328 in 65 games, veteran Carl Sims, and rookie Lon Doeschger will be the infield back ups.

Bill Stackhouse (290 10 47) is the third baseman.

The outfield will be Gold Glover Davey Santiago in left Gold Glover Matt Seibler (9 53 .273) in center and Mike Harris (8 39 .307) in right. Backups are rookies Nick Gray and bob Garibay and veteran Walt Garcia will primarily serve as a pinch hitter.

Defending league champion Oakland and the Boston Red Hawks who battled Detroit for most of the season will again be competing for the top spot and a surprise entry just might be the 1950 cellar dwellers the Minnesota Maulers, aided by a good first round choice, and a talented roster groomed carefully for this season.
