Detroit scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0Time to catch up on the 1951 Kid Gleason AL Pennant race....

Detroit the owner of the league's best won lost record in 1950 has gotten off to a slow start hovering around the .500 mark, currently at 10-11 after their 8-3 win that salvaged one of a three games in a home series with the Boston White Hawks. The win still left the Tigers just 4-8 at Tiger Stadium this season.

What is going on?

GM John Cobb said, ''We have several key players who have not hit their stride as yet and teams are playing us tough every game. We will get better one way or another.''

That was a not so vague hint that Detroit has offered at least two teams a blockbuster trade package and is waiting for a answer. At worst this might get the attention of several players currently hitting below the dreaded ''Mendoza Line''.

The Tigers are hitting .237 as a team but have had good pitching as their team ERA of 2.73 clearly indicates.

Jack Sexton gave the Tigers a good effort in his 5th start of the season going seven and two thirds innings allowing three earned runs on six hits with two walks and had three strikeouts. That left Sexton at 3-1 this season with a 2.73 ERA in 33 innings pitched (11 runs allowed/10 earned .. with 28 strikeouts and just 8 walks allowed.

Detroit got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first on a two-run homerun by Dode Pearce off Chick Hottman. Al Scarsella, who had singled and stolen second base scored in front of Pearce.

Hottman continued to have problems in the third inning.

Pitcher Jack Sexton and Davey Santiago singled. Sexton was caught stealing. Hottman walked three straight batters; Scarsella, Harris and Pearce to force in the second run of the game for Detroit (Scarsella). Matt Siebler singled. scoring Harris, but center fielder Dick Gumpert threw out Harris at the plate. for the second out. Bill Stackhouse grounded out to end the inning.

Detroit led 4-0.

in the fourth inning catcher Dave Colborn doubled into the left field cornwer. Sexton lined his second hit of the game to right foield scoring Colborn. Sexton still had not learend he was nt a base stealer and aBAoston catcher Alfonso Adams pegged him out a second time from Detroit to Boston for the second out. Dode Pearce remarked tongue in cheek that ''we really need to emphasis what a red light sign means to our pitchersin case they get a hit.''

Davey Santiag snapoped out of a season long slump with his second hit of the game and scored on a double by Al Scarsella who is just beginning to hit well himself.

Detroit led 6-0.

Jack Morgan replaced Hottman who had little luck against Detroit last season and the trend continued this season. Hottman (LP 0-3)went just three and two thirds innings, was roughed up badly for ten hits and six runs, walked three and did not record a strikeout.

Morgan got Boston out of the inning getting Harris to pop out to thrid base in foul territory.

Moprgan got three outs but gamve up an homerun to Bill Stackhouse with two outs in the fifth and was replaced by Fred Capilla who obtained the final out in the fifth.

Detroit then led 7-0.

Boston broke up Sexton's shutout in the seventh with three hits, a single by Julio Ducey, a double by Red Mundlinger and a tweo run homerun by Alfonso Adams.

7-3 Detroit.

In the eight Detroit got one of tjhise runs back on a double by Matt SDiebler snd two ground out on the infield.

8-3 Detroit.

Andy Hahn csame on to finsih it for Detroit by was ineffective. Hahn gave up a single to Phil Smith, struck out Mundlingerand then issued two walks to load the bases bringing in closer Ray Gillespie who did a good job of damage control to earn his seventh save.

Gillespie struck out Adrian Tiatt and got Calvin Scarce to hit into a game ending force out at home plate (1-2).

The Tigers will welcome the Tampa Bay Tanks to Tiger Stadium. The Tanks will pitch Jack Hill (1-2), Brian GAerbeck (2-3) and Scott Pfiel (1-1) against BILL aRDOIN (2-3) on a two game losing streak, Tom Blass 2-1, on a two game winning streak, and Kenny Rainwater, 0-2 w/a 8.20 ERA and badly in need of a win.
