Chicago 6 Kansas City Sharks 5

10 Innings

Chicago is now 3-0 in extra innings this season.

Chicago knocked off first place Kansas City in 10 innings to continue their good results of late. Chicago reached the .500 mark (22-22) with their tenth win in their last thirteen games.

Kansas City trailed 3-1 going into the 8th and erupted for four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Don Ripple hit a three run homerun and Charlie Easter reached on an error by third baseman Doug Ryan and scored on a Doc Clayton single.

Chicago tied the game in the top of the 9th to force extra innings. Carl Tannehill hit a solo homerun with one out. Eric Braun singled to left field and Harold Melton's double tied the game.

Chicago won the game in the tenth. Two hits by Doug Ryan and Chris Dejan put runners on the corners with no one out. Pinch hitter Bill Orrell ground into a 6-4-3 double play but Ran scored on the play (no run batted in) to give Chicago a6-5 lead that Frank Jemenez protected for his 2nd save.

Seattle 6 Washington 4

Seattle starting pitcher Sam Clark has pitched for three organizations this season...heck this month.....The thirty four year old right hander was put on waivers first by Chicago on August 2nd, picked up by St Louis on August 6th and traded to Seattle on August 14th for outfielder Bob Reidling.

Gray made his second start for Seattle and went six innings for his second win. allowing 10 hits and 4 runs, did not walk a batter and struck out 5.

The Seattle bullpen consisting of Roy Grand, Milt Anderson and Chuck Estrada Jr., who picked up his first save, pitched three scoreless innings.

Washington took a 1-0 lead in first inning on a run scoring double by Dick Damaska who drove in Jim Harris who also doubled.

Seattle made a response in their half of the second inning. Catcher Buck Velazquez singled to right, stole his fifth base of the year, and scored on a single by shortstop Larry Sweeney. Pitcher Sam Clark singled in Sweeney and the pitcher surprised Washington by stealing second base (second steal of the season by a Seattle pitcher (Roy Grand). Pendergast walked but pinch hitter Carter Rhoades bounced out to leave two runners on base.

Washington evened thing up in the 3rd on a one out single by Cotton Reiss followed by a run scoring double by Damaska.

Washington kept the momentum and went ahead 4-2 in the 4th. Ted Kreitz doubled, Dick Meloan doubled scoring him and Dixie Swift's double scored Meloan.

Seattle had a big sixth inning scoring three times on three hits. Velazquaz singled, Paul Huntz doubled and Larry Sweeney homered putting Seattle in front 5-4.

Seattle eighth; Pinch hitter George Pappas doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Andy Pendergast.
