Beefeaters chomping their way into pennant race...

The Beefeaters finished up their series with Oakland by earning a three game sweep over Oakland improving the club's road record to 11-15. One of the points of interest for the club. Kansas City is 0-7 in extra innings, something that is much improved.

In an effort to improve their starting pitching depth, the Beefeaters made a trade with the San Francisco Giants to get starting pitcher Sig Johnson (5-5 3.46 ERA) and shortstop Mike Peraza (.323 1 10 RBI), but it cost them shortstop Bobby Perkins (.259 2 27), one of their top run producers and a very good defensive shortstop, and starting pitcher We Allen (1-2 4.95 ERA).

In the series finale in Oakland rookie Bobby Elliott made his second start and win for the second straight time. Elliott went eight innings against Oakland allowing two runs on seven his to earned run average to 2.81. Elliott walked one and struck out six.

Oakland started Ken Graham who went six inning giving up three runs on six hits with five strikeout and no walks.

Kansas City scored one run on two hits off Elliott in the 2nd inning too jump out to a 1-0 lead.

Graham was a strikeout victim to start the inning. Tom Heard followed with a double into the centerfield gap. Tip Salkeld grounded out to third baseman Hal Boze for the second out. Vince Appleton doubled in Heard to cap off the scoring in that inning.

Beckert doubled to right field and Bobby Perkins who took over at shortsop in the 8th inning, aware that he was being traded after the game, singled in his final at bat, and saluted the fans, who at that time were unaware that he was saying good bye. Some of the fans misunbderstood the gesture and booed. Beefeater announcer, Tweet Tillman, told listeners on the radio what was going on and thise listening on their transisters passed the word around quickly and a staing ovation then drowned out the boos.

That put Kansas City ahead 4-2 and Jack Hoerst, quickly adapting to his new role as closer, earned his fourth save with a socreless 9th inning.
