Al Lopez 1950 End of season revue

Post by tomsawyer-finn »

The 1950 baseball season in the Al Lopez League saw one team in each league reach the fifty win plateau but unfortunately for both a pair of very strong wild card entries upstaged them in the playoff and went on to the World Series. Los Angeles of the American League went an impressive 54-27 to take the regular season crown by five games over Washington.,

During the regular season both teams' fan base was treated with a half dozen All Star performances by members of their home team.

For Washington Randy Sosa won the Cy Young Award. Sosa was 1-0 in the playoffs and World Series. His win came in game two of the ALCS when he went all nine innings shutting out the Sundogs on four hits. Starters Joe Bates, Bert Baker and Jim Young all picked up big wins in the tournament but the most valuable pitcher for the victors was bullpen ace Dickie Pashnick who recorded 25 saves during the season with a 1.48 ERA. In the postseason he was 1-0 with four saves.

Catcher George James (.254 16 47), third baseman Gus Clark (.269 9 39), of Bob McClure (.329 8 54) and pitchers Dickie Pashnick 25 saves 1.48 ERA, and starting pitcher Bert Clark (-2 3.20) joined him on the team

The All Stars for Los Angeles were; MVP Jack Speer (.348 9 48 w/13 stolen bases. Joe Hiller (.293 8 40), Nigel Ramirez (.281 8 37), Shawn Gartz (.300 9 39), starting pitcher Frank Busch (13-3 2.55) and closer (Fireman of the Year) Owen Corridon (2-1v2.61 29 saves).

The league batting champion was Jack Speer of Los Angeles at .348. Dave Jones, George James and Connie Gibson shared the homerun crown with 16 each and Jones' 58 runs batted in gave him two of the three categories in the triple crown category but he fell way short of the mark in batting average.

Pitching leaders were Frank Busch and Bert Baker in wins (13),

Randy Sosa's 1.65 ERA topped the list and he recorded a league best 122 strikeouts.

The only business left to conduct for the 1950 season is the draft. Tampa Bay and Los Angeles of the NL have the first two picks and the Devil Rays will draft Lexan Proenza, a 30 year old former Marine veteran for San Diego. The right handed batting first baseman, who is a gifted defensive player, may find himself at a different position in the majors as Tampa was quite pleased with their tandem from last season, Kevin Prokepsec and Bob Breeding.

LA will get Japanese third baseman Akinobu Nakayama.
