Baseball scores and summaries

Post by tomsawyer-finn »

There are some interesting and surprising things going on in the early going in the American League.

The most surprising things is the awful start by the Los Angeles Sundogs, the team that posted the best record in both leagues (54-27 .667) last season.

The fact that five teams, all tied with 5-4 records, one game behind Kansas City, is indicative of a close race involving multiple teams this season and that would be good for the league in so many ways. Attendance is already up around the league.

Minnesota is another one of the surprises. The 5-4 Molitors were third (44-37) in 1950, but off to a good start this year having won four straight.

The win was at the expense of the struggling Sundogs 4-1.

Minnesota scored three in the 5th inning. Gene Hill hit a homerun with no one on and no one out. Doug Fischer scored on an error by the Los Angeles third baseman Gil Frascatore. Tom Easler who reached on the error scored on a ground out by Tom Eschen.

Hill rippled and scored on a ground out by Eschen in the 9th inning.

Final 5-4 Minnesota.

Anaheim 13 Kansas City 4

Jose Blomdahl, (3 hits 3 runs batted in including a homerun in the 3rd inning), Bob Conwell (three run homer in the same inning and Joe McDonald (three hits three runs scored three RBI, homer in the 5th inning) powered the 14 hit Anaheim attack.

Ollie Nunnally (2-0) went the distance (8 hits four runs, all earned, four walks and seven strikeout) for the win.

Detroit knocked off Washington 6-3.

Otto Cunningham (2-0) went 7.2 innings for the win (3 runs on nine hits six strikeouts). Larry Kelsey got the final out of the seventh and Hal Peit worked a scoreless ninth for his 3rd save.

Tampa Bay 12 Baltimore 5

Tampa Bay scored seventeen run in its first eight games (a 2.5 runs per game average) but they erupted for 12 runs in game number nine in a 12-5 win that put the former celler dwellers in that elongated tie for second.

The Devil Rays exploded for 12 runs over the final six innings for the one sided win.

Centerfielder Pedro Torrez, second in homeruns and runs batted in with three and twelve, drove in six runs in this game. Torrez hit a three run homerun in the third inning to begin the scoring.

Tampa added two more in the 4th. Clemente walked the first two hitters, Leheny and Reese, and gave up a run scoring single to catcher Ralph Burns. Reese scored on a weak infield out by starting pitcher Don Voigt. 5-1 Tampa.

Baltimore struck for three in their next at bat knocking out Voigt in the process.

Gus Saunders doubled, Offa Foster singled him home. Bill Mathews followed with a two run homerun that brought Voigt's efforts to an end. (4.2 7 hits 3 runs (all earned) 6 walks 5 strikeouts.)

Art Warren replace Voigt and got the final out of the inning then worked two scoreless innings allowing three hits one walk and one strikeout to get the win.

Gary Bittker added a solo homerun in the 5th inning. 6-3 Tampa Bay.

In the 6th Tampa continued to pile it on scoring two more. Doubles by Ray Reece and Burns scored the first run and a ground out by Torrez got the second run in.

Torrez accounted for his 5th and 6th RBI of the game with a two run shot in the 8th.

Don Kelly homered for Baltimore in the 9th off Roy Mauro to make the final 12-5.
