1951 Season has started

Post by basilrathbonejr »

The 1951 season has started for the George Sisler League. But before we get too far down the road with the new season let us take time to remember the 1950 season which saw five teams in the Senior Circuit and four in the American post winning records for the year.

Atlanta proved itself to be the best team over the season winning 54 games and losing 27 to win the National League pennant by eight games over Brooklyn. Atlanta defeated Brooklyn in the NLCS in six games and went on to take the World Series from Los Angeles in five games.

Los Angeles and Seattle both finished the regular season with 49-32 records with Los Angeles prevailing in the ALCS in six games over the Scimitars.

The American League went down to the final game of the season with three teams having a chance to make the playoff. Oakland (48-33) finished sluggishly after being in first place for most of the season and failed to make the post season.

Congratulations to the playoff teams who adapted overcame and survived.

A couple of players worthy of mention are Seattle's Joe Burdette, the AL MVP. Burdette batted .321 with a league leading 18 homeruns and 58 runs batted in.

Frank Pernoll, of Los Angeles, 11-3 2.70 in 18 games, in 132.1 innings pitched, was the Cy Young Award winner.

Johnny Kingman save 26 games for Oakland with a 3-0 record in 42 games 43IP and just 2earned runs with a 2,51 ERA was the ''Fireman of the Year.''

Lets get ready for another good seaosn and good luck to all.
