A's 8 Washington 4

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Oakland began a three game series in Washington against Compton's Senators which is always fun and challenging.

Al newkirk, Oaklands number two starter got the call from the first place Athletics and Newkirk responded with eight superlative innings (five hits four runs, three earned walked three and recorded eight strikeouts.

Clyde Hartman took over in the ninth to strike out two of the three batters he faced to finish the game.

Washington's starting pitcher, Dizzy Trout, went the distance in the losing cause (2-2), allowed nine hits and eight runs, walked four and recorded four strikeouts.

Struggling Joey Brede started in the outfield and came out of his hitting doldrums hitting a two run homerun off Trout in the third inning to give Oakland a 2-0 lead.

It was Brede's first of the season and the 5th given up by Trout in 33.1 innings pitched.

Oakland added four runs to their total in the 4th inning and could have had more had not Washington played some stout defense in the inning.

Trout walked the lead off batter in the inning, Mike Pena, who stole second base (6th) and was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a ground ball single by Mark Sullivan that went past second baseman Jimmie Foxx. Trout walked Fred Crawford. George Dipino singled to left field to load the bases and Eric Baker plated two runs (Sullivan and Crawford) with a single to right field. Pitcher Al Newkirk was next and he singled up the middle driving in DiPino and a sac-fly hit by Billy Dittmer scored Baker.

6-0 Oakland.

Harmon Killebrew hit a lead off triple in the fifth inning and scored on a single by Happy Iott.

6-1 Oakland.

Killebrew drew Washington a bit closer in the seventh with a lead off homerun, his 2nd. to make it 6-3.

Duke Sim Jr. hit his 4th in the eighth inning giving Washington two homeruns in the game. Newkirk has now allowed two homeruns in 31.1 innings pitched.

6-4.

Eric Baker launched his first of the season in the ninth inning for Oakland to make the final score 8-4 Oakland.
