George Sisler League Recaps

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Oakland still leads the American League by three games over the 18-10 Seattle Superstars. Oakland was swept in a three game series by Detroit, who is the current designates ''streaker'' of the league, with five straight wins. Los Angeles (14-14) is seven games behind at the .500 mark to round out the first division of the eight team league.

The Oakland Atletics, the hottest team in baseball at a point in the early season has lost six of its last ten games and has run into a team wide hitting slump as well, that has dropped the team batting average to .253, 9th in the league, down from a high of .279.

Oakland 6 Los Angeles 4 in 11 innings.

Oakland is 4-1 in extra inning. The Scims dropped to 2-2.

The opener against Los Angeles in Los Angeles was scoreless through the first five innings as both starting pitchers had success. Left hander Kevin Cashman went nine innings for Oakland gave up just four hits and three runs (2 earned) walked two and had an impressive eleven strikeouts.

His teammates finally broke through against Los Angeles starting putcher, Hugo Petrosky, in the sixth inning. Petrosky went seven and a third innings, gave up eight hits and three runs, all earned, walked just one and recorded eight strikeouts. A two run single by second baseman George DiPino drove in Clyde Detrick and Tony Martinez on with singles.

One of two errors on good fielding shortstop Eric Baker, let in an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth for Los Angeles. Ed Cormier singled home Joe Corriden who reached on the error to cut Oakland's lead to 2-1.

Oakland went ahead by a 3-1 score in the top of the eighth inning when Clyde Detrick singled with one out, stole second base (3rd).

Andre McQuaid replaced Petrosky, pitching for Los Angeles.

McQuaid struck out catcher Mike Pena but long forgotten Tony Martinez singled to centerfield driving in Detrick to make in 3-1 Oakland.

That Oakland lead lasted exactly one-half inning because Joe Corriden blasted his second homerun of the season, with one on, one out, off Cashman (6th allowed in 39.1 innings pitched), to tie the game 3-3, and deny Cashman the victory.

Dick Zanni was on the mound in the top of the tenth inning for Los Angeles, when Oakland scored to take a 4-3 lead. Detrick singled with one out off Zanni and stole his second base of the game and fourth for the season to put himself into scoring position. Mike Pena failed to get him home by striking out for the second out. Tony Martinez, heretofore relegated to the bench, and being given a rare start, singled to centerfield driving in Detrick to put Oakland in front 4-3.

Johnny Kingman, the best closer in the league so far with thirteen saves, has stumbled somewhat of late, picked up his second blown save of the season in this game when Cormier tied the game 4-4 with a sacrifice fly sending the game into the eleventh inning.

Kingman did get luck into the "vultured'' win to go to (2-0), when Oakland came right back in the eleventh inning off Los Angeles' closer Darryl Stargell (LP 0-1).

Two slumping hitters got the rallied started; third baseman Bob Bailey doubled to right field and Stargell walked slumping shortstop Eric Baker walked to start the inning. Pinch hitter Manny Haas, batting for Kingman, popped out to second baseman Joe Corriden. Billy Dittmer, Oakland's centerfielder, singled to left field driving in Bailey to make the socre 5-4 Oakland. Baker made it to third base in the play. Lee Pagliarono, a recent acquisition form New York, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to produce an add-on run to make it 6-4.

Clay Lambright, who has done an excellant job in the bullpen serving in several roles oncludoing closer in the absence of Kingman, picked up his third save of the season pitching arounbd two hits allowed by getting Cap Aguirre to pop out to shortstop Eric Baker to end the game.

Oakland's offense has gone into a team wide slump of late. The team batting average has dropped from the 270's earlier in the season to .257, 9thin the league. The hitters had thirteen hits in the game, eleven were singleds and two were doubles. The A's augmented the offense in this game with their speed , stealing six bases in seven attempts.

Dedrick, Martinez and DiPino each stole two bases. Matrinez was caught stealing once.
