Good pitching and low scoring games dotted the American Leagues scores today.

Oakland shutout Los Angeles 2-0 in Los Angeles. Lefthander Al Newkirk went eight innings for the win a d is now 5-1 with a 2,19 ERA. Newkirk was charged with no runs on five hits. He issued five walks and struck out eight.

The walks came in the early innings. Los Angeles stranded ten runners in this game.

Oakland left only one runner in the game. Oakland had five hits and one walked. The A's scored the only two runs of the game on Clyde Detrick's two-run homerun off losing pitcher Bobby Barnes (2-3). Barnes went the distance for the Scimitars.

Johnny Kingman finally picked up his 14th save after a short down period for him.

Detroit shutout Cleveland 3-0.

Harry Joyce had eight dominant shutout innings in this game, allowed four hits and struck out eight. Diego Jaeger picked up his 9th save with one strikeout.

Detroit scored three runs on nine hits to back Joyce. RBI singles by Allan Delahanty and Bob Waugh put Detroit ahead 2-0 in the 5th inning Matt Smith's sacrifice fly in the 6th scored Gail Davis who had doubled for a 3-0 final.

Washington downed Minnesota 6-2.

Dizzy Trout (5-2) was the winning pitcher.

Sebastian Compton drove in three runs with two hits, one of them his 6th homerun, and Steve Christmas hit his first with no one on in the first inning.

Dwight Searcy hit two run single in first inning for Toronto.

Joe Burdette's three run shot in the 9th turned things around for Seattle.

Dwight Searcy was the winning pitcher. Chet French took the loss.
