Oakland 5 Detroit 1

Second baseman Jack Cassini was recently picked up off the waiver wire from Brooklyn on July 18, to fill a hole at second base for the As provided immediate dividends. drove in three of the five runs for Oakland and Kevin Cashman pitched into the ninth inning surrendering only one run on eight hits, walked two and struck out eight before giving way to Larry Magnuson for the final two outs.

With two men on via walks, Magnuson got Matt Smith to ground into a game ending double play.

Cassini, batting .387 with Oakland, hit his first homerun this season in the second inning off losing pitcher Bob Fiore (4th allowed by Fiore in 70.2 innings pitched) to put Oakland in front 1-0.

Oakland added a run in the 4th inning. Catcher Mike Pena singled to right field, stole his 16th base of the season, and scored on a two out double by Cassini. Oakland 2-0.

Detroit picked up a run in the top of the 6th inning on a run scoring double by Steve Wise. Oakland 2-1.

Bob Bailey hit his league leading 11th homerun with one out in the bottom of the sixth off Fiore. 3-1 Oakland.

Oakland added on in the 8th inning when Mike Pena singled with one out, stole second base (17th) and scored on a single by Clyde Detrick. Detrick advanced to third on a ground out by George DiPino and scored on a ground out by Cassini.

5-1 Oakland FINAL.

SEATTLE 2 MINNESOTA 0

Seattle is the current streaker in the American League with a 10 game winning streak in tact after Eddie Kretlow shut down Minnesota on four hits over eight innings.

Minnesota recorded 16 assists behind Kretlow.

Johnny Mills pitched the ninth inning allowed one hit and no runs for his seventh save.

Larry Carlson's two run homerun in the 4th inning provided Kretlow with all the run support he needed.

2-0 FINAL.
