Oakland has a winning record against six of the eight teams in the league but Seattle has handled them well winning five of the six games played this season. Seattle has outscored Oakland 32-18 in thise games.

Detroit was 4-4 against the first place A's going into the final and rubber game of their series.
Seattle on the other hand has had problems with Minnesota (2-6) and is 3-3 against lowly Toronto.

OAKLAND 4 DETROIT 3

Oakland won game three of the series to improve to 5-4 against Detroit and thus won the series two games to one to maintain its one game lead over red hot Seattle.

Oakland's starting pitcher Dave Terlecky made his third start looking for his seventh win of the season. Terlecky improved to 7-2 with his eight innings against Detroit where he allowed three runs on eight hits walked one and struck out four.

Closer Johnny Kingman as usual pitched the ninth inning and recorded his 18th save of the season, tops in the league.

But it was Detroit who forged ahead in the early going scoring three runs in the 2nd inning.

Steve Wise opened the inning with a double past third baseman George DiPino and George Hochette followed with a single to center field sending Wise home with the first run. Matt Smith and Hugh Minello both singled. Buddy Sullivan hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Hochette scored on the play. Smith went to third base. Al Thompson finished off the scoring with a triple clearing the bases (Smith scored run number three).

Clyde Dedrick hit a solo homerun for Oakland in the 4th to cut the lead to 3-1.

Jack Cassini, carrying a hot bat of late (.379), singled to left field to start the 5th inning. DiPino reached on the first of two errors committed by Detroit, this was a two base throwing error on shortstop Matt Smith. Casini advanced to third base. Catcher Kevin Hodges bounced out to first with no advance by the runners. Dave Terlecky reached on an error by right fielder Steve Wise that Cassini and DiPino both scored on tying the game 3-3.

Oakland finally took a lead in the 6th inning. Dedrick singled past second baseman Al Thompson with one out. Joey Brede drove in the winning run with a double to left .

Los Angeles 2 Cleveland 0

Frank Pernoll (6-3) went eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts for the win. Darryl Stargell completed the shutout with a scoreless 9th inning. Stargell picked up his 17th save.

Frank Hernandez hit a two run homerun (6th) off losing pitcher Red Mann in the 4th inning.

Seattle 12 Minnesota 1

Paul Davis took advantage of 12 runs on 13 hits by his teammates as he coasted to the win. Dick Toenes hit his 10th of the season for Seattle in the game.

Seattle put the game on ice early with a five run third inning, and a three run 5th.

Toronto 5 Washington 4

11th Inning

Toronto is now 3-2 in extra inning games.

Washington dropped to 2-4.

Toronto broke a seventeen game losing streak, the longest losing streak of the season.

Sebastian Compton hit a two run homerun in the first inning

Toronto 5 Washington 4 in 11 innings.Toronto fought back one run at a time.

Matt Morris gave up singles to Bob Bell and Swede Kemp to put runners on first and thrid. Bell scored on a ground out by Alex Benedict. 2-1 Washington.

Toronto tied the game in the second inning when Clint Gerkin doubled and Hal Bergman singled him in.

Alex Benedict took the lead 3-2 with a homerun in the thrid inning.

Washington tied the game in the top of the 6th inning when Duke Sims singled in Compton.

Washington took a lead in the 10th inning on a double by Sebastian Compton and sent in their closer Uguesth urbina to finish off Toronto.

Urbina failed in his quest. Toronto came though with a run to send it into the 11th inning. Bert Smith walked and scored two outs later on a single by Kemp.

Toronto won it in the 11th.

Pop Willaims and Bob Mattingly started the winning rally with singles putting runners on first and third. Mattingly stole second base to eliminate a double play. Clint Gerkin was walked and the infield came in.

The next batter Domingo Simcock grounded back to the pitcher and Williams was forced out at the plate. Belve Swormsteldt hit a game winnoing sacrifice fly to win the game and break the sawful losing streak!
