George Sisler League Recaps

Post by basilrathbonejr »

The Seattle SuperStars (38-18) now have a firm hold on first place in the American League (two game lead) over second place Oakland, 36-20.

Things are leaning Seattle's way in other areas too. Seattle leads in the season head to head matchup with a 5-1 record AND is hosting the A's on their home field where they are 20-9. Oakland is very good on the road with a 18-9 mark thus far. So the American League race is far for over.

Los Angeles at 35-21 is only one game behind Oakland in third place is in the picture as well. LA is 4-5 versus Seattle and 3-5 against Oakland.

Oakland rebounded in game two of their series with last place Toronto with a 7-3 victory to stop their recent stumbles. It was a homerun derby gam as the teams traded homeruns.

Al Newkirk (7-3) went eight and two thirds innings for Oakland allowing eleven hits and three earned runs while walking only one and striking out nine. Clyde Hartman came in in the ninth inning with two outs after Swede Kemp hit his fifth of the season.

The A's took the lead early and never trailed. Bob Bailey his 12th and Clyde Dedrick followed with his 7th to put Oakland up 2-0 off losing pitcher Chet French (1-12).

Back up catcher Kevin Hidges hit Oakland's third long ball of the game, his 4th, innning with Jack Cassini on base with a single. Oakland could have socred more in the inning. Billy Dittmer and Joey Brede had singles and Eric Baker drew a walk to load the bases. but Bailey popped out to shoirtstop to end the inning.

Toronto had a big oppurtunity in the top of the 5th when Mattingly singled. Simcock flied out to Brede in right field. French's bunt attempt forced Mattingly at second (1-6) for the second out. Toronto was not done though. Bob Bell and Swede Kemp both singled and Belve Swormstedt walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. That however was all however for Toronto. Alex Benedict flied out to Pagliaroni in left field. 4-1 Oakland.

Clint Gerkin led off the sixth inning with his 3rd homerun to make the score 4-2.

Oakland had big inning off reliever Chuck Robinson in the seventh. Joey Brede singled to left. Eric Baker walked and Bob Bailey singled in Bede. Bailey stole his tenth base of the year to go along with a league leading 12th homerun and he and Baker both socred on a single by leftfielder Lee Pagliaroni.

7-2 Oakland FINAL
