George Sisler League Recaps

The results of the most recent games have tightened things up a bit in the American League. Seattle and Oakland are now tied for first atop the standings with identical 38-21 records and the Los Angeles Scimitars are just one game off their pace at 37-22.

Los Angeles defeated Minnesota 11-4 scoring those eleven runs on fifteen hits. Lew Ludwig led the way with three hits and three runs scored and Joe Corriden hit his seventh homer of the season, with one on, off losing pitcher Art Mlicki(1-6) in the five run Los Angeles first inning.

Stan Loes (6-3) gave up four run on eight hits over nine innings for the complete game win.

Detroit 5 Seattle 2

After edging Seattle 3-2 in game one, Detroit came back in game two to knock off first place Seattle 5-2 and allow the other contenders to gain ground on the suddenly struggling 'Stars.

Detroit's Steve Goodall was a one man wrecking ball in this game knocking in the game's first run in the first inning with a single and scored on George Hochette's grand slam off Willie Weekin that put Detroit on top 5-0.

Cowboy Shannon took over from Meekin with one out in the first inning and went six scoreless inning scattering three hits and one walk to allow Seattle a chance to catch up and Shannon chipped in two riun scoring singles along the way to help out.

Shannon had a run scoring single in the second inning that put Detroit in the scoring column. Lew Valo, who had scongeld leading off, scored the run to make it 5-1.

Dan Davey hit his eleventh of the seaosn with in the fourth, Erci Deneker doubled and Joe Burdette singled him in to make it 5-3 after four innings.

Seattle scored two more runs in the fifth inning to tie the game 5-5. Burdette got one run in with an infield out and Shannon's second hit of the game, another single, tied it.

Goodall put Detroit back in front to stay after an error with one out put George Atkinson on. Goodall launched his first of the season off losing pitcher Matt Flores.

Final 7-5 Detroit.

Oakland 8 Washington 2

Oakland improved to 5-1 against Washington and 5-0 in Washington in game two of their series with an8-2 thumping of the Senators.

Clyde Hartman (2-0) got the win in relief and Omar Daal took the loss (3-2).

Joey Brede (three hits three runs scored) and Clyde Dedrick (five RBI) were the hitting stars for Oakland. Jimmie Foxx piut Washington in front in the first inning with his 13th of the season.

Oakland came back in the sixth ining to tie the game 1-1 when Brede drew a walk and scored on one of two triples for Oakland in the game, this one by Clyde Dedrick.

Washington regained the kead in the bottom of the sixth on Happy Iott's solo shot off Joe Sullivn, the two homeruns given up by Sullivan in the 8th and 9th he has allowed in 68.1 innings pitched.

Joey Brede doubled and Eric Baker hit Oakland's second run scoring triple of the game in the eighth inning to tie the game 2-2.

Oakland scored six runs in the ninth inning to blow it opewn late in the game. Daal gave up five straight singles to George DiPino, Sammy Hales (caught stealing for the first out), Jack Cassini, Billy Dittmer and Brede put two runs across. Baker walked to load the bases Detrick hit his 8th of the season and first grand slam to ice it for Oakland.
