Oakland 4 Seattle 0

Seattle won sixteen of nineteen games from August 15th until September 5th. That surge put the SuperStars into a three way competition with Oakland and Los Angeles for first place. Since then however, they have lost seven straight games, the last two losses in games one and two of a crucial series with the Oakland A's.

After a late one run loss in game two the importance of game two magnified for Seattle. They sent thirty two year old right hander Paul Davis to the mound opposing one of Oakland's top pitchers, Dave Terlecky.

Davis went seven and a third innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Control issues with his live moving fastball were evident in the fact he walked five and struck out six

Terlecky, a thirty three year old right hander from Sandusky, Ohio, went eight solid innings for Oakland shutting out Seattle on three hits. Terlecky walked three and struck out seven in the game.

Terlecky is now 8-4 with a 3.24 ERA in 108.1 innings pitched. (15 starts).

Oakland rested closer Johnny Kingman prior to this series. Rumors swirled that he was suffering from a tired arm. He lost his lead in saves, but has responded with two saves in this series, giving him 20 for the season.

Neither save came very easy for Kingman. In the first game he gave up two runs on two hits but that was explained away as rustiness due to the lay off. In game two he came in after Clyde Hartman who began the ninth inning had allowed consecutive singles to Dick Toenes and Lou Valo.

Kingman retired Dan Davey on a pop fly to right fielder Joey Brede. Jose Krsnich singled to left field. Left fielder Lee Pagliaroni got to the ball and got it back to the infield intime to stop Toenes at third base, loading the bases. A small yet significant play in the game.

The 1-0 score held until Dittmer changed it in the fifth. Dittmer led off with a single and scored Oakland's second run on one of two doubled in the game by Joey Brede.

Kingman took control then first striking out Silver Aldridge and then finishing with a flourish throwing a fastball by Lena Carter.

Center fielder Billy Dittmer had a stand out game going three for five with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Dittmer homered in the top iof the first inning off Seattle Paul Davis, the sixth allowed by Davis in 72.2 innings pitched this season.

Oakland scored the games final two runs in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Bill Woodward walked and Dittmer doubled driving him in. Dittmer scored on a two out single by Bob Bailey.

Final 4-0 Oakland.
