George Sisler League Scores

Oakland 4 Minnesota 1

Twenty three year old left hander Billy Madrid reversed his fortunes with eight strong innings against Minnesota to earn Oakland a win in game two of their series with Minnesota and to also vault Oakland back into first place by one game over Los Angeles and two over Seattle, their two closest pursuers all season.

Madrid held Minnesota to just two hits over eight innings. The young lefthander struck out eight and walked two. Madrid retired the first six batters before allowing a solo homerun to Hector Netzel, his seventh of the season, and the 14th allowed by Madrid in 74.2 innings pitched.

The only other hit by Minnesota was a seventh inning single by Rod Llenas who was immediately erased in a double play started by third baseman Bob Bailey.

The only other baserunners for Madrid were a walk to Llenas in the fifth inning, pitcher Tom Johnson reached on an error by third baseman Bob Bailey to start the sixth, and a two out walk to Walter Jones in that sixth inning. Madrid struck out two and got Johnny Starr on a comebacker to the mound to end that inning.

Oakland scored two runs on eight hits off Johnson, the losing pitcher (5-5) over his seven innings.

Oakland tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning. Eric Baker doubled and Bailey doubled in the run. Catcher Mike Pena's 10th homerun with two outs in the sixth inning pit Oakland in front to stay.

Closer Johnny Kingman earned save number 22, second in the league to LA's Darryl Stargell.

Bailey is second in homeruns to Washington's Jimmie Foxx and is second in runs batted in with 44 to Washington's Foxx and Duke Sims 46.
