George Moriarty Game Recaps

Post by basilrathbonejr » Thu Nov 29, 2018 1:43 pm

The three team race in the American League continues with Oakland, Seattle and Los Angeles still battling for the pennant after just eleven games remaining on the schedule. Oakland is 3-6 against Seattle and 6-4 versus Los Angeles. Oakland is 20-13 at home and 24-13 on the road this season.

One statistical not, catcher Mike Pena and shortstop Eric Baker of Oakland are tied for the lead in stolen bases in the AL with 23. The remarkable part of this is not many catchers have ever led any league in stolen bases.

Oakland won game one of a very important series with Los Angeles 6-1. Twenty three year old left hander Billy Madrid won his second straight start by going the distance for the second time this season allowing ten hits and one run while striking out five and walking four.

The losing pitcher for Los Angeles was Hugo Petosky. Petosky (4-6) has faced Oakland four times this season and has two losses for his efforts. Petosky has logged 27.2 innings against the A's allowed 33 hits 18 rubs 14 earned walked 10 and struck out 27.

Oakland scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Lee Pagliaroni singlked, stole second (5th) and scored on catcher Mike Pena's clutch single.

The A's tacked on a run in the fourth inning. Pena walked and stole his 23rd base. Bailey drew a second walk of the inning and Clyde Dedrick singled to center field to score the run. Bailey was thrown out at third base by center fielder Ed Faneyte and Detrick was caught stealing to end that inning.

In the bottom of the fourth it was Oakland's turn to flash some leather. Lew Ludwing singled to start the inning and Nellie Chiti doubled. Underated Ernie Morton, now playing an excellent right field after the injury to Joey Brede threw Ludwig out at the plate for his first career outfield assist. Madrid struck out Hernandez and Petosky to end the inning.

Los Angeles scored its only run in their half of the sixth inning. Doubles by Steve Blett and Lew Ludwing produced the run.

Oakland took compolete command in the seventh inning by scoring four runs.

Billy Dittmer singled to center field and stole his 15th base as pinch hitter Kevin Hodges struck out. Pinch hitter George DiPino (for Andy Grant) singled in Dittmer. Pitcher Billy Madrid dvance the base runner with a bunt and Lee Pagliaroni drove in DiPino with a single to right field.

That brought right hander Ed Stone in to replace Petosky and Eric Baker greeted him with a single that advanced Pagliaroni to third base. Bob Bailey's two run single capped off the scoring as Oakland won by a final score of 6-1.
