Second place Washington began its second straight series with one of the two teams the Senators are competing with for a playoff spot and must have a better result in this series after dropping two of three to first place Baltimore and dropping to 3-6 against Baltimore. Washington also has not fared well against Oakland featuring a 3-6 record against them as well going into the series.

Washington was able to improve to 4-6 with a 12 inning come from behind victory in this game started by 1950 Cy Young Award winner Bill Fisher 7-4 2.24 ERA this season. Fisher logged seven and one third innings allowing eight hits and three runs walked five batters and struck out six. Fisher was out pitched by lefthander Jack Grich, Oakland's starting pitcher. The thirty two year old Oakland lefthander went eight innings allowing two runs on six hits did not walk a batter and struck out six.

The scoring for most of the game came via solo homeruns. Both teams hit a solo himerun in the first inning. Jim Knother hit a lead off homerun, hius first of the season for Washington off Grich to put the Senators up 1-0. Oakland tied it in the bottom half on Kevin Medina's seventh of the season, also a lead off homer off Fisher.

Oakland went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a lead off homerun by Reggie Henderson, his fifth of the season.

John Bracken hit his seventh for Washington in the top of the sixth inning tying the score 2-2.

Oakland took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The runs were the first of the game not coming as a result of a homerun.

Henderson walked and stole second AND third base, his 8th and 9th steals of the season. Daryl Livengood singled to left field with one out driving in the run.

Scott Newcomb replaced Fisher gave up a single to Livengood and walked pinch hitter Dick Williams to load the bases. Newcomb got a game saving key strikeout of Median, who had homered earlier, and then got out of the inning by inducing a ground ball to third baseman Steve Rigney to end the inning.

Wahington staged a ninth inning rally to send the game into extra innings off reliever Sam Lowry. Lowry walked Bracken with one out. Bracken was forced at second by Jamison. Dick Walters came through with a double off the left field wall to plate Jamieson with the tying run.

Both teams bullpen pitched well. For Washington Newcomb after his shaky start, went one and two third innings allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Winning pitcher Cristian Roche went two innings allowing one hit and recording three strikeouts.

Roche became the winnijg pitcher when Washington notched a run in the top of the 12th inning. Jamieson singled to right field to start the inning and Earl Stainback walked Walters. Steve Rigney followed with a run scoirng single to right fielkd.

Bert Maltzberger replaced Stainback.

Pinch hitter Doug McGrafigan doubled high off the right field wall scoing both Walters and Rigney putting Washington ahead to stay because Sam Jorgenson pitched a scoreless inning to end it picking up his 22nd save in the process (2nd in the AL).

Washington improved to 3-1 in extra innings.
