Washington, Oakland & Baltimore battle for first

Three American League teams, Washington, Oakland and Baltimore, are tied for first place with 20-12 records. Oakland is the hottest of these clubs, winning eight of their last ten games.

Washington has the best offensive output of any team with a .286 team batting average led by All Star first baseman Jimmy Jamieson. Jamiespon is hitting .368 with 21 RBI, both figures tops in the league and his seven homeruns ranks 7th.

Washington speed dominates on the bases withg seven Senators in the top ten; Van Brucker leads with 14, Jamieson has 12, Rigney 11, Walters 10, Knothe 10, Walsh 8 and Bracken 6.

Will Brady at 6-0 with a 1.71 ERA is the top starting pitcher in the league.

Washington's four game winning streak ended in game one with a 5-3 loss to Minnesota but they rebounded in game two with a hard fought 6-4 victory to even the series.

Washington took the first lead of the game in the second inning. Steve Rigney doubled to right field and Bill Riley singled him in.

Minnesota took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a one out triple by Billy Baldwin. Norm Kelsey singled to right field tying the game. Rigney stole second base as Jake DeTore struck out. Kelsey scored the go ahead run on Jim Rhodes singled to center field.

2-1 Minnesota.

Mimnnesota extended their lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Baldwin walked, Kelsey singlled him to third where he tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly by DeTore. (3-1 Minnesota). DeTore sigled run number four in the 6th inning.

Minnesota scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. John Bracken walked. Pinch hitter Jim Knothe singled to left field and pinch hitter Ed Stroud lofted a sacrifice fly to bring in Bracken.

4-2 Minnesota.

Washington turned the game around in the top of the eighth inning with five runs. Earl Battle was on the mound to start the inning.

Jamieson led off with a double to right field. Dick Walters singled in Jamieson to make it 4-3.

Archie Evans replaced Battle. Walters stole second base (10). Steve Rigney singled to right field and stole his eleventh base. Bill Rigney singled in Walters and Rigney to put Washington in front 5-4.

Mitsuru Hirose entered replacing Evans and gave up a two run homerun to John Bracken (6th) to put Washington ahead 7-4.

Three Washington pitchers, Scott Newcomb, Pete Kusnyer, and Sam Jorgeson pitched the final three ining recording two strikeouts. Jorgenson picked up his 9th save of the season.
