A travel day during a baseball season usually means an off day for travel and that is what changed the Boston Red Sox from the Washington Senators' best friends after sweeping first place Baltimore into the ''opponent'' or ''adversary'' and the start of a new series. Boston improved to 40-27 just two games behind the AL leaders after handing the Patapcos with their fourth straight loss.

More good news from this front was Oakland lost its second straight to 5-2 to Anaheim.

27,500, a standing room only crowd, saw the action from Griffith Stadium. The starting pitcher for Washington was Claude Ammondale, a twenty seven year old right hander from Great Neck, NY, and Pete Grater. a twenty seven year old left hander, from LaPeer, Michigan took the mound for the visitors.

Washington struck forst with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Grater gave up a two out single to left to Ed Stroud and walked catcher Hal Knepper. Pitcher Claude Ammondale helped himself on this occasion with a bloop double down the right field line driving in Stroud and Knepper. Washington shortstop Jim Knothe singled in Ammondale with a soft liner to left field that dropped for a single.

3-0 Washington.

The Senators got an additional run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ammondale picked up his second hit of the ball game, a ground ball single to centerfield. Knothe flied out and Knepper struck out before Jimmy Jamieson doubled on a liner that got down and past the left fielder Billy Strands.

4-0 Washington.

There was one more run for Washington and it came off relief pitcher Tom Parrish in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dick Walters singled to center field with one out. Walters stole second base (19th) and scored on Steve Rigney's single too center.

Ammondale took a three hit shutout with two walks and six strikeouts into the ninth inning wilted in the humidity of the day with one out. Pinch hitters Willie Jones and Frank Holke both drew walks for done in Ammondale and Johnny Stratten homered to make it 5-3.

That finished Ammondale, and brought in Sam Jorgenson for his 12th straight save, and 24th for the season. Jorgenson struck out Johnny Clyde and Rudy Nokes flied out to end the game.
