ANAHEIM 6 BALTIMORE 5

Baltimore Skid Continues!

Losing streak at seven and team has lost eight of their last ten games.

Baltimore has not won since taking two of three from Washington from September 9th to the 11th.

Anaheim shortstop Al Barbosa was the star of this game taking part in four double plays that stifled scoring chances for Baltimore in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th innings. Barbosa also had the key hit of the game in the fourth inning when he doubled with the bases loaded driving in all three runs.

Later in the sixth inning, Anaheim added on three more runs to go up 6-0, when Tony Wiggons reached on an error by shortstop Keaton Davis and Hal Wilson beat out a bunt single in fron to Jesse Vuckovich who then hit a three run homerun off Baltimore ace Marv Geary, the losing pitcher (8-3) was charge with all six runs over five innings (five were earned) on seven hits and three walks. Geary struck out two.

Baltimore stage a furious late inning rally scoringtwo runs in the 8th inning on a two run single by Court Thomas and three more in the ninth on run scoring singles by Mike Frost and a infield ground out by Hardy Hauser only to fall one run short and lose for the seventh consecutive time and the eighth loss in ten games.

Lee Niehoff (7-5) picked up the win going eight innings allowing four runs on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Craig Roberts garnered his 20th save of the season.

Geary said after the game, ''We made a comeback and came up a run short. That's what happens when you are in a streak like we are. You just have to play your best and trust your team to do better.''

WASHOINGTON 4 CHICAGO 3

Washington has won only six games of its last ten, which is not an extremely impressive streak but it has been good enough to propell them into a first place tie with Baltimore who once held a seven game lead earlier in the season over Washington.

Washington ace Will Brady went n seach of his 13th win in 15 decisions this season, but did not figure in the final decision. Brady lasted seven and one third inings and was charged with one run on eight hits with seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Brady left with a 3-1 lead in the eight inning. In that frame Brady allowed a lead off double to Hal Kern on a 3-2 pitch and then took twelve more pitches to strikeout Buster Thomas signaling the end for the All Star right hander.

Cristian Roche came in to get the final two outs of that inning finishing off Kern with a called third strike.
Chicago benefited from an over worked Sam Jorgenson sub par performance. Jorgenson blew this third save chance of the season by giving up a two run homerun to Jack Herrin in the ninth inning. It was Herrin's 4th of the season and the third hit off Jorgenson in 29.1 innings.

Scott Newcomb took over for Jorgenson and got the final out of the top of the ninth and was the winning pitcher when Washington rallied in the bottom of the inning for the winning run.

Tied 3-3 Jimmy Jamieson singled on a ground ball that just got by diving second baseman Paul Thorne. Jamieson stole second base, his league leading 29th of the season. Washington continued to benefit from poor defense by the opposition as Steve Rigney reached on an error by Chicago third baseman Jack Farr.

Jamieson scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Wally Dowd.
