Washington 9 Missesota 8

Wshington broke its two game drought by taking game one of a three game series in Minnesota 9-8.

The close high scoring battle saw Washington bang out 15 hits to score 9 runs off Hersh Abernathy and five relievers. Washington scored two runs in the first inning off Abernathy.

Steve Rigney singled to right field and John Bracken doubled past right fielder Angel Ettchebarren driving in the first run. Jimmy Jamieson singled in Bracken.

Billy Baldwin (7) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning off Bill Fisher, the seventh this season allowed by Fisher.

2-1 Washington.

Abernathy reached on an error by Fisher in the bottom of the thrid inning to start a three run rally. Doug Richardson walked with one out and Laddie Rieble hit the first of two homeruns he had in the game putting Minnesota ahead 4-2. One of the runs was unearned.

Fisher left after five innings in favor of rookie Scott Bildilli.

Bildilli went an inning giving up no ones on one hit with a strikeout.

Les Sewell came in to pitch after Bildillito pitch the 7th.

Sewell allowed two runs on two hits in two thirds of an inning. Etchevarria singled and Nap Davis homered (8th)

6-3 Minnesota.

A big five run inning turned the game in favor of Washington off Mitsuru Hirosa.

Bracken had an infield single to third base and Jamieson tripled (2nd) in the run. Walters flied out, but Jamieson scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Bill Lanning. Clarence Grimshaw replaced Hirosa.

Van Brucker walked and stole second (#23). Brucker advanced to third base on a ground out by Knothe.

Three straight pinch hitters then came through for Washington with run scoring hits, Wally Dowd doubled, pinch hitter Ed Stroud singled and Odell Zdeb, made his major league debut with a pinch hit single off pitcher number four Walter Radinsky to finsish the socring in the inning that put Washington in front 8-6.

Les Sewell was on the mound for Washington in the seventh inning when Laddie Reibe tied ther game with a two run homerun. It was Reibe's second of the game and seventh of the season.

Washington went back in front in the eighth inning. Red hot John Bracken walked with one out and Dick Walters doubled with two outs to produce the go-ahead run.


Washington 5 Minnesota 4

Jim Knothe singled and went to third base on a single by Jimmy Jorgenson. Knothe scored on a grounbd out to third base by Walters to give Washington a quick 1-0.

The score remained the same until the seventh inning when Steve Rigney beat out a single off the pitcher's glove, stole second base. Rigney continued to third base when catcher Bob Renfer's throw sailed into center field. Rigney scored on a Billy Burke single. Matsuru Horose came in to pitch and Wally Down pinch hit for Steve Walsh. Dowd, who leads the league in pinch hit appearances this season tripled in the run.

Sam Jorgenson came in in the ninth for his 27th save.

Washington is now 44-30 one game Behind Baltimore (45-29).
