With just three games remaining in the season Baltimore (48-30) holds a one game lead over Washington (47-31). The have both clinched a playoff spot and the only thing left to decide is who wins the regular season crown and who gets the wild card spot.

Washington and Anaheim completed season play with Washington taking the final regular season series three games to two but Anaheim took the head to head seores for the season seven games to five.

Jim Knothe and Steve Rigney each had three hit games as part of a ten hit Senators attack that led to a important 3-1 victory for Washington.

Washington took a 1-0 first inning lead on Steve Rigney's double and a run scoring single by John Bracken.

Anahiem tied the game 1-1 in the 6th inning on a solo homerun by Juan Gomez, his fourth of the year, and the 8th hit off Washington starting pitcher John Mercedes this season.

Anaheim knocked Mercedes out of the game with one out in the seventh inning. (ND 6.2IP 5H 1R/1ER 3BB/4SO)

In the seventh inning Alex Connolly singled to left field. Mercedes struck out Jeff Nichols for the first out a Connolly swiped second base. A good throw by catcher Hal Knepper and a quick tag by shortstop Jim Knothe made it a very close play. Knothe took exception to the call by umpire Jiggs O'Hara, but to no avail.

Bill Turner advanced the runner with a groundout to first baseman Jimmy Jamieson who made a good defensive play on a sharply hit baseball.

Scott Newcomb replaced Mercedes than and kept the score the same getting Tommy Miller to ground out to third baseman Steve Rigney.

Anaheim starting pitcher Bill Turner retired the first two batters he faced in the 8th inning; Brucker, on a ground out to third and pinch hitter Wally Dowd popped out to third base. Pinch hitter Bill Riley singled past shortstop Tommy Miller. Jim Knothe doubled to left field and Steve Rigney singled to leftfield driving in Riley and Knothe to put Washington ahead 3-1.

The Washington bullepn took over and did a stand out job. Cristian Roche gave up a lead off walk in the 8th inning to Bruce McCarthy. Jesse Vuckovich forced him at second base. Juan Gomez, who homered earlier, grounded into the second double play of the game turmned by the Washington infield in the game to end the inning.

Then in the bottom of the ninth inning Washington closer Sam Jorgenson, earned his 28th save of the season with the hep of a game ending double play started by shortstop Jim Knothe.

Washington has turned a league best 69 double plays this season and committed a league low 31 errors.

Washington
