DOC EDWARDS LEAGUE BASEBALL

Post by jacktoast »

ANGELS 3 NEW YORK 0

The top two American League clubs, Anaheim and New York, went into their head to head battle for first place in Albie Pearson Stadium both having lost the final game of the prior series. The Bad Boys had scored a ton of runs in their last five games (33) but also had given up a lot as well (24) and losing three of the five games. The Angels had ascored ponly 18 runbs but allowed only eight in winning four of five and picking up two games on New York.

Anaheim after this game had crafted two shutouts in over that span, the first a combined shutout by Larry Casey, Charlie Vines and Frank Adams and the other a one hit shutout by Frank Roberts and Pat Knell.

Roberts allowed only a looping single to right by Ed Pettigrew in the fourth inning with one out and a lead off walk to Billy Doyle in the 8th inning.

Roberts struck out four, got most of his outs on pop ups and fly balls. First baseman Don Lary was busy taking care of four ground ball to him and handling 11 total chances flawlessly. The left fielder Gilhooley and the center fielder Dillon handled seven chances.

On the other hand Jim Harris was let down by his defense on three occasions and all three put him in stressful situations or worsened an already bad situation. Harris shut out Anaheim on four hits and one walk over the first six innings stranding six runners. Harris had just two perfect innings, the 5th and 7th.

A dropped fly ball by left fielder Roy Foxen in the 6th inning. Harris buckled down and struck out both Jim Nixon and Paul Dillon and then finished off the Angels getting Marquard to ground out weekly to end the inning.

Still scoreless in the 8th inning, Ossie Gilhooley got things started with a single. Nixon flied to left field and Dillon ground out to first base. And once again the defense dealt Harris a blow, this one was fatal. Foxen dropped another flyball in left field for a two base error. Gilhooley scored the first run of the game and Marquard made it to second base.

Dave Blackwell took over from a very disappointed and angry Jim Harris.

Blackwell and catcher Dick Hudek kept things spiraling downward for New York by getting their signals crossed resulting in a passed ball allowing Marquard to go to third base. Blackwell walked Tom Kearns.

Les Raydon pinch hit for Lary. Raydon, the starting catcher for the Angels, being rested for this game, doubled driving in two runs.

3-0 Anaheim

Three runs on two hits a big error and p[assed ball and one was left on base.

Inconsistent closer Pat Knell struck out two of the three batters he faced for his 7th save.

Knell's ERA a blotted 5.40 signifies the problem for Knell, great one game, bad the next.
