ANGLES NEW YORK … GAME TWO

Anaheim 5 New York 2


Aneaheim made some roster moves prior to game two bringing up pitcher Marshall Ashford and Matt Kainer from AAA and picking up ifieldervTodd Campos off waivers from San Francisco.

The designated for assignment infielders Bob Slocomb and Walt Windham and outfielder Joe Rooks.

Ashford replaced StevevVerhoeven in the starting rotation and made his major leaguevdebut in game two of the series with New York. New York welcomed the twenty four year old right hander to the big leagues with a lead off homerun by Gus Leathers on his second pitch in the majors.

1-0 New York.

The Angels tied the score in the 4th inning only a solo homer by Truy Uhlaender (4th) off Julio Pittman (4th allowed by Pittman).Anaheim took a 2-1 lead in the inning when Don Lary singled and scored on Dick Benton's double into the left field corner.

2-1 Anaheim.

New York came right back in the top of the 5th inning to knot it up again with the help of an error by the Angels thrid baseman Jim Nixon. Kinsley Wiltse on second with a double scored on the misplay. The Angels took the lead once again in the bottom half of that inning when Tom Kearns singled vto left and Pittman walked Paul Dillon to start the inning. David Marquard grounded to shortstop advancing both runner to second and third. Nixon atoned for his error with a two run double (4-2 Angels).

That was the end for Pittman (4.1 innings 9 hits 5 runs 2 walks 6 strikeouts). The Angels added a third run in the inning off reliever Dana Andrews on singles by Les Raydon and Uhlaender to make it 5-2 Anaheim.

Charlie Vines came in to close it out and after a shaky beginning, a double by Glaod and a walk to Wilste, he retired Pinch hitter Gus Jordan and Gus Leathers on fly balls to left field and Wayne Romano hit into a game ending force out for Vines first save.

Ashford gotthe win (1-0) going 8 innings 9 hits 4 runs/.3 earned 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. Pittman took the loss 3-2.

Game Three

Anaheim 4 New York 3

A frustrated New York club showed upo for game three bernt on avoiding a sweep and cleaning up their defense. Scoring in the first inning had not been a problem for the New Yorkers and they continued that trend in this one as well. Gus Leathers homered in game two to start that game and doubled of mike Marion to begin this one. Romano advanced Leathers to third base with a ground out and Ed pettigrew singled in the run. Pettigrew was 6-10 in the series.)

Dave McGhee the New York starter shurt out the Angels throught the first six innings and Roy Foxen who had had a terrible series offensively and defensively hit a two run homer in the 7th to increase the lead to 3-0.

McGhee started the 9th inning with a three hit shutout going (two walks and seven strikeouts). The first batter, Troy Uhlaender, popped out to thrid baseman Brett Lesnoch in foul territory, the secodn Don Lary hit a can of corn to right fielder Oscar Gload (his 5th putout of the game) but an error once again dwerailed the new York tran.Shortstop Wayne Romano botted a grounder allowing Dick Benton to reach.

That was the end for a very angry McGhee (8.2 innings 6 hits 2 runs no earned runs 3 waoks 7 strikeouts. All Star Joe Gonzalez came in to get the final out and gone noine giving up three straight hits instead; a single to Tom Kearns, a run scoring double to Paul Dillon and a walk off two run hoimer to Ossie Gilhooley.

Anaheim got the sweep and the Seattle Perfectos also passed the Bad Boy by taking tweo of three from Baltimnore to gain a share of foirst place. The Perfectos lost 5-2, and won the next two 10-8 and 5-1.
